Details

Anthropic is seeking software engineers to build safety and oversight mechanisms for AI systems. The Safeguards team develops systems that monitor models, prevent misuse, and support user well-being. This role focuses on the data foundations underlying detection, evaluation, and review systems, including pipelines, data stores, and governance controls deployed across AWS, GCP, and Azure.

The systems handle sensitive data and support decisions with significant consequences for customers and people affected by model misuse. Correctness, retention discipline, access control, privacy-preserving data handling, and portability across customer-managed and third-party environments are core engineering requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Build and operate the Safeguards data platform, including ingestion and processing pipelines, warehouses, other data stores, schemas, and interfaces used by detection and review systems.
  • Operate Safeguards systems day to day while maintaining a high operational standard and reducing the manual effort required to sustain them.
  • Own data governance and integrity, including retention and access controls, privacy-preserving handling of sensitive data, lineage, and correctness guarantees.
  • Design systems that run portably across cloud providers and within customer-managed and third-party environments.
  • Partner with analysts, investigators, and researchers who rely on the data.
  • Build internal tooling to support operational teams and their workflows.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Experience building and operating data pipelines or data stores in production.
  • Ability to work across the data stack, including ingestion, storage, and consumption.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to people outside the discipline.
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A field of study relevant to the role, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive software engineering experience, including significant experience with data-intensive systems.
  • Experience with integrity, spam, fraud, or abuse detection and mitigation.
  • Experience building trust and safety detection and intervention mechanisms for AI or machine learning systems.
  • Experience building and operating large-scale distributed data infrastructure.
  • Experience working across multiple cloud providers or building provider-agnostic infrastructure.
  • Experience meeting data governance requirements in regulated or high-sensitivity domains.
  • Experience working closely with operational teams to build custom internal tooling.

Benefits

Anthropic offers competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office spaces for collaboration. Anthropic sponsors visas and states that it will make every reasonable effort to obtain a visa for candidates who receive an offer, although sponsorship is not guaranteed for every role or candidate.
