This hands-on role will analyze privacy-protective, aggregated ChatGPT usage data to identify local and regional patterns in AI adoption across the United States and other priority markets. The role combines quantitative analysis, strategic problem-solving, dashboard development, and data storytelling for policymakers, journalists, business leaders, and the public.

The position is based in San Francisco, Washington, DC, or an approved remote location. Work arrangements and relocation eligibility depend on the approved location.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze approved, aggregated ChatGPT usage data to identify geographic patterns across states, metropolitan areas, and other markets.
  • Develop insights into AI use in education, workforce development, entrepreneurship, small business, professional productivity, and everyday problem-solving.
  • Identify regional differences in adoption, use cases, and engagement to inform policy priorities and stakeholder outreach.
  • Develop market-level profiles and recurring analyses of AI use across communities.
  • Evaluate data representativeness, limitations, and appropriate interpretation.
  • Partner with policy, communications, and partnerships teams to translate findings into evidence-based narratives.
  • Develop state- and market-specific insights for policy initiatives, public affairs campaigns, legislative engagement, and regional communications.
  • Support reports, fact sheets, presentations, data visualizations, talking points, and other internal and external materials.
  • Communicate uncertainty, methodological limitations, and the distinction between observed usage and broader societal outcomes.
  • Create dashboards, reporting tools, and repeatable analytical processes.
  • Collaborate with data science, research, product, and engineering teams to improve analytical methods and develop new approaches to understanding AI adoption.
  • Establish consistent metrics and methodologies for tracking trends over time and comparing geographic markets.
  • Combine internal insights with relevant public datasets for economic, demographic, or geographic context.
  • Follow OpenAI's privacy, security, and data governance requirements, including data aggregation, approved access, and safeguards against identifying individual users.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in data analytics, business intelligence, economic research, public policy analytics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience working with large, complex datasets.
  • Experience using Python, R, or comparable analytical tools for quantitative analysis.
  • Experience developing dashboards, reports, and data visualizations using Tableau, Looker, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to independently structure analytical questions, identify relevant data, conduct rigorous analysis, and communicate findings clearly.
  • Strong understanding of data quality, sampling limitations, representativeness, and the distinction between correlation and causation.
  • Ability to translate technical findings into concise, accessible insights for nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality work in a fast-moving environment.
  • Intellectual curiosity about AI, public policy, economic opportunity, and the effects of emerging technologies on people and communities.

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting public policy research, government affairs, strategic communications, or public-sector decision-making.
  • Experience with geographically disaggregated state-, county-, or metropolitan-level data.
  • Experience combining proprietary datasets with public data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, or Bureau of Economic Analysis.
  • Experience analyzing behavioral or product usage data and translating findings into research, reports, or public-facing insights.
  • Background in economics, political science, statistics, data science, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Experience developing analytical products or reporting capabilities from the ground up.
