Details
GitLab is looking for a Backend Engineer to join the Change Record team within the Source Code stage. The team is building trustworthy records of code changes for both humans and AI agents. This backend-focused role is suited to an engineer with full-stack experience who enjoys working on existing systems and new product development.
The role works with one of GitLab’s oldest and most complex product areas. You will use Ruby on Rails to improve systems serving GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated. Source Code provides the interface layer, through Gitaly, to the Git repositories behind a large share of GitLab traffic. The role includes improving performance, caching, rate limiting, observability, and resiliency while collaborating with product, design, security, Gitaly, Code Review, and Source Code Experience teams.
The position is fully remote and based in the United Kingdom or Poland.
Responsibilities
- Develop secure, well-tested, performant features and improvements using Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, and other technologies.
- Work through complex requirements and legacy constraints to deliver clear solutions while protecting system reliability.
- Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic supporting source code workflows.
- Collaborate across functions and teams in synchronous and asynchronous environments.
- Use AI agents for well-scoped development work and critically review their output.
- Write maintainable code following GitLab standards and participate in constructive code reviews.
- Monitor production health metrics, participate in Tier 2 on-call, troubleshoot incidents, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve observability and resiliency.
- Share knowledge through code reviews, technical documentation, and collaboration.
Requirements
- Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs using Ruby and GraphQL.
- Understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices.
- Experience with full-stack development and user-facing workflows.
- Experience writing backend unit and integration tests, with familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review processes.
- Clear written and spoken English communication skills.
- Ability to manage priorities, work through ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance when needed.
- Experience using AI coding agents to accelerate software development while critically reviewing their output.
- Bonus: experience building production agents or agent-based workflows.
About the Team
The functional team works across Europe and North America and supports synchronous and asynchronous collaboration. It includes four backend and frontend engineers and works closely with Source Code teams, Agentic Preview, Repository Services, Hardening, Gitaly, and AI Governance.
