Details

The Talent Systems team within BizTech partners with Employee Experience, Recruiting, Payroll, Procurement, Legal, and Privacy teams across Airbnb’s global operations. The team owns more than 300 production integrations and custom applications spanning payroll processors, benefits carriers, identity providers, compliance vendors, and internal platforms, with Workday at the center.

This hands-on Staff Workday Integration Engineer role will define integration strategy and technical standards, build and operate Workday integrations, and lead engineering for Airbnb’s Workday MCP server and agentic integrations. The role requires ownership of production reliability, security, compliance, automation, and architecture across global HR technology systems.

Responsibilities

Integration Architecture and Development

  • Define Workday integration architecture standards, reusable patterns, governance frameworks, error handling, retry frameworks, and observability standards.
  • Lead architectural decisions for global rollouts, payroll runs, benefits enrollment, system migrations, and other high-risk initiatives.
  • Design, build, and maintain inbound and outbound integrations using Workday Studio, Core Connectors, EIBs, Document Transforms, RaaS endpoints, Workday Web Services, Workday Extend, and Workday Orchestrate.
  • Develop integrations using SOAP and REST, including WSDL interpretation, web service versioning, request and response handling, and error management.
  • Own high-volume payroll, benefits, global workforce, and multi-country integration scenarios, including PECI and PICOF interfaces.
  • Build advanced Custom Reports and Calculated Fields for integrations and AI-tool consumption.
  • Manage integrations through Workday’s semi-annual release cycle, including release assessment, sandbox testing, production deployment, and change controls.
  • Identify and remediate technical debt involving functionality, performance, error handling, and scalability.

AI and Agentic Integration

  • Own engineering for Airbnb’s Workday MCP server, including tool design, per-user OAuth 2.0 authorization, human-in-the-loop controls for write actions, idempotent write contracts, guardrails, rate and volume limits, and audit logging.
  • Build agentic integrations that allow AI assistants and enterprise LLM tools to read and act on Workday safely using authenticated-user permissions.
  • Co-own AI architecture and governance for Talent Systems, including evaluation of Workday Agent Ready Tools, MCP Explorer, Workday Agents, and other HR AI platforms.
  • Translate business use cases into permission-safe, operationally feasible, and measurable AI tool architectures.
  • Instrument AI tooling for usage and cost to inform platform entitlement and licensing decisions.

Reliability, Security, and Governance

  • Establish and operate SLAs, monitoring, alerting, reconciliation, escalation, and runbook standards for critical integrations and AI tools.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and implement preventative controls for integration failures.
  • Manage PII handling, audit controls, data reconciliation, and compliance requirements related to GDPR, SOC 2, SOX, and applicable privacy regulations.
  • Enforce OAuth 2.0, including user-context flows, SAML, PGP, SFTP, and other secure authentication and transport practices.
  • Own tenant deployment strategy, Git-based version control, CI-friendly testing, rollback planning, and sandbox-to-production promotion.

Technical Leadership and Collaboration

  • Act as the technical authority for Workday integrations and HR agentic tooling across BizTech.
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through design reviews, code reviews, pair development, and documented standards.
  • Partner with Employee Experience, Recruiting, Payroll, Total Rewards, Legal and Privacy, IT Security, enterprise architecture, and external vendors.
  • Write integration design documents, MCP tool specifications, and operational runbooks.
  • Represent Talent Systems in architecture forums, AI tooling reviews, and vendor technical discussions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 9 years of experience in enterprise technology, software development, or systems integration.
  • At least 5–6 years of hands-on Workday integration development across requirements, design, build, testing, go-live, and post-production support.
  • Advanced Workday Studio experience, including multi-step integrations, sub-integrations, custom error and fault frameworks, and XSLT transformations.
  • Experience with Core Connectors, EIBs, worker data, business process events, payroll and benefits outbound connectors, and Document Transform payload mapping.
  • Experience with PECI, PICOF, third-party payroll providers, RaaS, advanced reports, calculated fields, and API endpoint exposure.
  • Experience with Workday Web Services, WSDLs, SOAP, REST, versioning, and error response handling.
  • Expert proficiency in XSLT, XML, and JSON, with Java skills sufficient for Workday Studio custom steps.
  • Working knowledge of the Workday Business Process Framework and HR and payroll processes, including hire-to-retire, compensation, benefits, time and absence, and compliance reporting.
  • Experience with REST API design, OAuth 2.0, authorization code flows, and token lifecycle management.
  • Experience building or integrating LLM tools, AI agents, or MCP servers with enterprise business systems using permission-safe access patterns and human-in-the-loop controls.
  • Experience with middleware or iPaaS platforms such as MuleSoft, Boomi, or Workato.
  • Experience with Git-based version control, deployment, and change management.
  • Strong knowledge of HR data security, PII handling, audit requirements, SAML, PGP, and SFTP.
  • Experience managing Workday’s semi-annual release cycle, including impact assessment and sandbox testing.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership and experience influencing architecture and engineering quality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write design documents and runbooks and communicate technical trade-offs.
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Workday Pro Certification in Integrations.
  • Hands-on Workday Extend experience, including data models, UI pages, Extend REST APIs, and orchestrations.

  • Experience supporting global, multi-country HR technology environments.
