Details

As an Experienced Data Engineer in the AgroEnergy team, you will combine hands-on data engineering with technical leadership. You will design, build, and improve cloud-native data solutions in Azure that power predictive models and a self-built dimensional data warehouse supporting energy optimization and trading decisions for agricultural clients and B2B Flex Services.

The role includes defining the technical direction of the data platform, identifying technical debt, establishing engineering standards, mentoring engineers, and contributing directly to code and architecture. Key initiatives include expanding EPEX day-ahead forecasting from hourly to quarter-hourly resolution, introducing AI-assisted data transformations in C#, migrating toward Snowflake using OneLake with Iceberg tables, and aligning the Azure environment with Eneco's Azure Policy Framework, NIS2, and current security and compliance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain end-to-end data pipelines from ingestion through transformation to structured data exposure.
  • Develop and maintain predictive data flows for forecasting and energy optimization, including expanding EPEX day-ahead forecasting from hourly to quarter-hourly resolution.
  • Build and optimize a dimensional data warehouse for analytics and Power BI reporting.
  • Create and maintain an architecture overview covering platform components, integrations, dependencies, and data flows.
  • Define and communicate technical direction for data architecture, engineering standards, and platform modernization.
  • Lead the migration and integration of platform components toward Snowflake, including OneLake with Iceberg tables.
  • Align the Azure landscape with Eneco's Azure Policy Framework to support NIS2 and current security and compliance standards.
  • Introduce and embed AI-assisted tooling for data transformations in C#.
  • Identify technical debt and translate it into improvement plans and initiatives.
  • Provide technical guidance, peer coaching, and mentorship to other data engineers.
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines for data workflows, including testing, validation, and deployment.
  • Apply Infrastructure as Code for Azure resource deployments.
  • Ensure monitoring, incident analysis, and operational reliability of data pipelines.
  • Collaborate with testers, business analysts, product owners, and stakeholders across the AgroEnergy and B2B Flex Services value chains.

Requirements

  • Strong data engineering experience in Azure cloud environments, or C# backend development experience with a clear data engineering affinity.
  • Proficiency in C# or equivalent programming languages used in data-intensive environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure Functions, Azure SQL Databases, and Azure DevOps.
  • Strong SQL skills, including writing, reviewing, and optimizing complex queries.
  • Dutch language proficiency: reading and listening are required; speaking and writing in either Dutch or English are accepted.
  • Understanding of software engineering best practices, including code reviews, version control, testing, and CI/CD.
  • Experience working directly with analysts, data scientists, quantitative specialists, or business-oriented teams.
  • Ability to translate business and domain requirements into architecture decisions and technical direction.
  • Experience contributing to platform migration or modernization initiatives.
  • Familiarity with data modeling and architecture patterns such as dimensional modeling or Data Vault.
  • Experience with Azure monitoring and observability tooling.
  • Genuine interest in DevOps principles and production-grade deployment practices.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Snowflake and/or lakehouse patterns such as OneLake with Iceberg tables.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tooling in a data engineering or C# context.
  • Familiarity with energy market data, EPEX trading, or forecasting in a volatile commodity market.
  • Background in agri-tech or another domain where data directly drives operational or commercial decisions.

Work Environment

You will join Eneco's Digital & Tech domain as part of a dedicated value-chain team embedded within the AgroEnergy business and also serving B2B Flex Services. The team consists of data engineers and a test engineer. The role offers flexible hybrid working with Rotterdam as the home base. The stated working arrangement is 40% in the office, 40% from home, and 20% flexible; with manager approval, working abroad within approved countries is permitted for up to three weeks per year, with a maximum of two consecutive weeks.

Benefits

  • Gross annual salary between €70,000 and €90,000.
  • FlexBudget, including an 8% holiday allowance and, depending on the role, a bonus or collective profit sharing.
  • FlexBudget can be paid out, used to purchase additional holiday days, or saved.
  • Personal and professional development opportunities.
  • Flexible hybrid working from home, the office, or abroad within the stated limits.
  • Flexible working hours and the option to work from home when the role allows it.
