Details
GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Dedicated Infrastructure team. The role combines hands-on technical leadership with team development and involves working with the team's Product Manager to balance delivery speed and quality, guide architecture decisions, and lead the team through incidents.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the Product Manager to set clear priorities and deliver with quality and speed.
- Maintain at least 99.9% availability for Dedicated Infrastructure, strengthen security, and automate operations to support more tenants at scale.
- Provide clear direction and meaningful feedback while building shared ownership of development and operations.
- Improve the platforms and tools owned by the team so feature implementers can manage their services in production through self-service workflows.
- Recruit, onboard, and develop productive team members, supporting their growth and accountability.
- Lead by example with proofs of concept and AI-assisted approaches.
- Simplify processes and automate repetitive manual work.
- Model effective incident management, lead timely resolution and escalation, and document and teach best practices across GitLab.
- Use data to prioritize work, quantify impact, and manage risk and technical debt.
- Explain technical trade-offs to stakeholders to support their decisions.
Requirements
- A track record of building and owning large-scale distributed services, with the technical depth to evaluate architecture and guide technical strategy.
- Experience with fleet management, Terraform, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and automated provisioning at a scale of 20 or more clusters.
- Experience owning services with 99.99% availability service-level objectives (SLOs), and an understanding of the operational practices needed to sustain them.
- Experience using AI tools to improve team productivity, including lessons learned from successes and missteps.
- Experience building and managing accountable, high-performing teams, including addressing underperformance and making difficult performance decisions when needed.
- Ability to lead complex projects to completion without relying on a dedicated Technical Program Manager.
- Experience leading distributed, remote teams effectively.
About the Team
The Dedicated Infrastructure team builds and operates large-scale distributed infrastructure for GitLab Dedicated, GitLab's hosted software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform. The team's work centers on availability, security, fleet management, and automated provisioning across tenants. The team also builds self-service platforms and tools that enable feature implementers to own their services in production.
