About the Team
Stripe's Risk team is building the Requirements Management API and infrastructure that enables Stripe to collect, explain, track, and resolve risk requirements throughout the user lifecycle, from onboarding through ongoing monitoring. This work makes Risk reusable across products, markets, and user types, while helping Stripe expand regulated financial products without rebuilding compliance and risk workflows for each new use case.
The team's interfaces and standards influence how requirements are created and fulfilled across Risk, Onboarding, and product integrations. The team currently has six people and is actively hiring, with broad cross-team influence across more than six teams.
The underlying system has significant technical complexity in API design, scalability, and reliability. It is used broadly across Stripe, serves high-volume traffic, and has critical SLOs supporting meaningful user-facing APIs. The role also requires strong product judgment to translate risk-management needs into reusable APIs and clear, effective remediation experiences for Stripe users.
You will partner with Risk Engineering, Onboarding, Product, Data Science, and product teams integrating with the platform to align decisioning, information-collection, and user-facing presentation experiences around consistent, explainable requirements.
Responsibilities

- Translate organizational goals into concrete execution plans, manage complex parallel workstreams, and hold teams accountable for delivering meaningful results.
- Develop the vision, strategy, and goals for the area, anticipating user needs, technical challenges, and business priorities.
- Communicate plans clearly to the team and senior leadership, connecting the team's work to Stripe's broader mission.
- Develop senior engineers and emerging leaders through coaching, stretch opportunities, and candid feedback.
- Build productive relationships with stakeholders across Product, Design, and adjacent engineering teams.
- Resolve ambiguity at organizational intersections and align teams around shared priorities.
- Recruit senior engineering talent, maintain a high hiring bar, and build diverse, high-performing teams.
- Promote high standards, ownership, operational excellence, quality, urgency, and strong engineering craft.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience with 10 or more years of software development experience.
- At least 4 years of engineering management experience, with an autonomous track record of impact as an Engineering Manager.
- Experience leading high-complexity engineering teams executing multiple difficult, high-impact workstreams in parallel.
- Proven ability to influence and align cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority.
- Meaningful recruiting experience, including attracting and developing senior engineering talent.
- Technical depth sufficient to guide architecture decisions and maintain high standards for product quality and engineering craft.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing a team operating a critical service with demanding reliability and latency requirements.
- Depth in API design and the ability to maintain a high bar for API quality when the primary product is an API.
