Coinbase is building the future of regulated derivatives as part of its Institutional Everything Exchange. Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM) is a CFTC-regulated Futures Commission Merchant that enables retail and institutional clients to trade and clear US futures and options.

As an FCM Tech Lead, you will be a hands-on technical anchor across the entire FCM lifecycle, including market data, order entry and routing, settlement and money movement, back-office reporting, and the in-house risk and liquidation system. You will help lead a major replatforming effort onto next-generation architecture while reducing legacy vendor dependencies.

Responsibilities

• Own design and architecture across the FCM core, from market data and order routing through settlement, reporting, and risk.
• Drive the next-generation replatforming effort, reducing legacy vendor dependencies while improving stability and reliability.
• Set the technical bar through code, design reviews, and standards.
• Pay down the most important technical debt.
• Partner across execution, risk, and lifecycle pods, as well as with Product, CFM Risk and Operations, Finance, and Compliance.
• Deliver correct and auditable systems and translate strategy into a roadmap.
• Mentor engineers across the team and help scale engineering quality.

Requirements

• Extensive backend engineering experience with demonstrated ownership of complex, production-grade distributed systems.
• Direct FCM or derivatives experience, including hands-on ownership of one or more parts of the futures trade lifecycle: settlement, clearing, margin and risk, order entry and routing, market data, or back-office books and records.
• Deep proficiency in a modern backend language, preferably Go; Java or a similar language is also relevant.
• Experience with event-driven, high-availability architectures.
• Familiarity with Ion XTP is a plus.
• Experience in a regulated or financial environment, such as CFTC/NFA-regulated environments or comparable settings, where correctness, auditability, and reliability are critical.
• A track record of delivering end-to-end, from scoping and architecture through implementation, monitoring, and iteration.
• Experience replatforming or migrating from legacy systems while remaining hands-on with coding and raising engineering quality standards.
• Ability to use generative AI responsibly with human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Work Environment

Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only, company. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.”

Compensation and Benefits

The annual base salary range is $218,025–$256,500 USD, excluding equity and bonus. Total compensation may also include equity and bonus eligibility, as well as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
