Security is at the foundation of OpenAI’s mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The Security team protects OpenAI’s technology, people, and products. The team is technical in what it builds and operational in how it works, supporting all products and research.

The Forward Deployed Security Engineer will secure novel applications of OpenAI’s technology for strategic and high-impact public sector customers. The role works closely with engineering teams to ensure infrastructure deployments are highly secure against adversaries. The engineer will embed throughout the deployment lifecycle, working on-site and hands-on to ensure security from design through production and ongoing operations.

The role is preferred to be based in Washington, DC, although remote work may be considered. OpenAI uses a hybrid work model of three days in the office per week. Travel to and work from customer sites is required.

Responsibilities

• Embed with strategic public sector customers to implement and maintain robust security controls.
• Provide security expertise and serve as a design and technical thought partner for protective controls, including access controls, authentication, encryption, network security, and system security.
• Collaborate with teammates, cross-functional teams, customers, and service providers to achieve security and compliance goals.
• Ensure continuity of critical security and monitoring controls through routine security assessments, threat monitoring, and security validation exercises.

Requirements

• Active United States security clearance.
• 5+ years of security engineering experience, with an emphasis on infrastructure security, application security, network security, datacenter security, and systems engineering.
• Familiarity with deployment models for cloud platforms such as Azure and AWS, as well as underlying infrastructure primitives including Kubernetes and Terraform.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Golang, or similar.
• Proven track record of developing high-quality, scalable, and secure infrastructure.
• Experience with security operations, including insider threat monitoring, network or endpoint detection and response, red team operations, or penetration testing.
• Comprehensive knowledge of modern adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures.
• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
• Ability to thrive in dynamic environments and navigate ambiguity.
