The Intelligence & Investigations Engineering team builds systems that detect, analyze, and disrupt abuse across OpenAI's products. The team partners with Child Safety and other cross-functional groups to protect users while advancing the development of beneficial AI.

The role involves exposure to sensitive and egregious content.

Responsibilities

• Prototype, build, and maintain intelligence systems that detect, triage, and enable efficient human review of potentially high-severity harm.
• Work closely with operators and investigators to design and deliver systems that help them work faster, more accurately, and more safely.
• Develop across the stack, including user interfaces, services, data pipelines, and other systems required to solve operational problems.
• Collaborate with partners across Product Policy, Platform Integrity, Safety Systems, and Research.
• Contribute to the team's technical strategy, particularly for child-safety tools and systems.
• Report on impact using data-driven analysis.

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience as a software engineer.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience owning systems end to end, from infrastructure and data ingestion to frontend tooling.
• Interest in working at the frontier of AI capabilities and integrating new models and APIs into practical systems.
• Experience building and operating large-scale data pipelines or search and retrieval systems.
• Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript.
• Familiarity with Spark, Kafka, Flink, data warehouses, and SQL.
• A product-minded approach, with the ability to design around user workflows and iterate quickly based on feedback.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity and open-ended problem spaces with evolving goals.
• Experience engineering for high-severity harms is valued.
• Understanding of the workflows and pain points of operations and investigative teams, along with curiosity about solving complex investigations.
• Bonus: knowledge of child-safety-specific challenges, such as secure handling of quarantined content and reporting to NCMEC.
