Senior Product Designer, AI

GitLab is seeking a Senior Product Designer to help shape AI-powered developer tools and the next generation of intelligent software development experiences. The role is part of the AI Product Design team and focuses on designing interfaces for AI agents, seamless chat experiences for developers, and design patterns that make advanced AI capabilities natural and accessible.

Responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end design process across GitLab's AI suite, from early exploration to polished execution.
• Create user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs.
• Determine when AI is the appropriate solution versus a traditional approach.
• Break complex AI experiences into releases that fit GitLab's delivery cadence.
• Define success criteria, use evidence to guide decisions, and collaborate with Product Management, Engineering, and Technical Writing.
• Establish strong visual and interaction design standards and provide constructive feedback.
• Contribute validated user evidence and design direction to roadmap discussions.
• Use journey maps, storyboards, and design explorations to connect current work to longer-term product vision.
• Help designers across GitLab understand and apply AI capabilities.
• Contribute AI-specific patterns to the Pajamas Design System.
• Mentor designers, participate in hiring, interview candidates, evaluate portfolios, and share design knowledge.

Example projects include Duo Workflow, AI agents across the software development lifecycle; Duo Chat, an AI-powered DevSecOps assistant; and AI-powered code suggestions and review tools.

Requirements

• A strong portfolio demonstrating design thinking and iteration, ideally including AI/ML products, agentic workflows, or natural language interfaces where user control, transparency, and trust were important.
• Experience designing AI workflows, including multi-step, agentic, or automated processes.
• Strong visual and interaction design craft.
• Experience conducting research and translating findings into well-reasoned design decisions.
• Experience working iteratively in agile product development while balancing speed, quality, tradeoffs, and long-term vision.
• Experience designing in complex enterprise contexts.
• Working knowledge of Git, HTML/CSS, accessibility best practices, and design systems.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to simplify complexity, explain design rationale, and build alignment.

Team

The AI Product Design team is part of GitLab's broader UX organization and focuses on experiences for AI-powered features across the DevSecOps platform. Designers collaborate closely with AI Product Management and Engineering, as well as teams working across the product, including code creation and security scanning.
