Details

Sentry's Foundational Storage team builds and supports the stateful storage systems used by Sentry's products, including object storage, relational databases, key-value stores, and caches. The team develops storage services such as the open-source Objectstore and builds libraries and APIs that make storage systems easier to use. The role focuses on data consistency, availability, performance, security, and cost efficiency across growing products and traffic.

Responsibilities

Design and operate storage systems used across Sentry, including configuration and performance tuning.
Create APIs and abstractions that provide product teams with storage best practices for correctness, security, and scale.
Solve large-scale storage challenges involving consistency under concurrent access, sharding, rebalancing, and routing reads and writes across storage backends.
Work with product engineers to select storage approaches, plan safe migrations, and support adoption of storage tools.
Collaborate with Platform and Infrastructure teams, including analytical storage and streaming teams, to deliver a fault-tolerant platform.
Align roadmaps and standards and design for failures and recovery.
Improve storage performance and cost efficiency while keeping the platform simple for product teams.
Write primarily Rust and Python, provide clear user-facing documentation, and develop advanced testing scenarios such as production-scale chaos tests.
Own latency and availability SLOs, improve monitoring and incident response, and participate in the on-call rotation.
Contribute to open-source projects as part of the role.

Requirements

5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating distributed, stateful systems in production.
Hands-on experience with object storage, relational databases, and caching systems at production scale.
Understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including consistency, concurrency, request failures, and retries.
Proficiency in a systems language such as Go, C++, Java, or Rust, with comfort working in Python. Sentry primarily uses Rust and Python and welcomes engineers who are new to Rust.
Experience running services on Kubernetes in a cloud environment, including observability, SLOs, and incident response.
Good written and spoken English, particularly for explaining technical choices and writing documentation.
Experience with key-value or wide-column stores is a plus.
Familiarity with Terraform is a plus.
Experience building shared libraries or internal APIs, migrating data between systems, or improving system performance and cost is nice to have.

Benefits

Base salary range of CA$200,000 to CA$420,000 per year.

Up to a 10% bonus.
