Details
Site Reliability Engineers II treat operations as a software problem, focusing on the reliability of systems and services, including availability, performance, scalability, latency, observability, and efficiency. They maintain key components and develop automation to minimize human labor and increase system reliability.
SRE II professionals implement technical solutions based on business requirements, estimate effort and impact, deliver high-quality work, collaborate with partner teams, and participate in incident response. Depending on the business area, they may act as part of a business service owner team, own infrastructure components, or advise product development teams on Site Reliability Engineering.
Responsibilities
- Build software applications using relevant development languages, systems, services, and tools.
- Refactor and simplify code using design patterns, standard libraries, and testing techniques aligned with the test strategy.
- Maintain application data security, integrity, and quality according to company standards and best practices.
- Evaluate and design architecture solutions while considering cost, business requirements, technology requirements, and emerging technologies.
- Understand the infrastructure and architecture implications of changing or adding systems.
- Own applications and services end to end, including deployment, production operations, application health, performance, metrics, documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures.
- Reduce business continuity risks and bus factor through appropriate practices, tools, documentation, continuous delivery, and experimentation.
- Address and resolve live production issues while mitigating customer impact within service-level agreements.
- Perform root cause analysis, develop long-term reliability improvements, contribute to postmortems, and track live incidents.
- Reduce technical debt, identify bottlenecks, prepare infrastructure for scaling, and keep infrastructure current.
- Reduce operational cost and human labor through new technologies, automation, and software features addressing availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency.
- Review production systems and network infrastructure using observability metrics, business KPIs, and capacity planning.
- Partner with development teams to define appropriate monitoring and alerting metrics.
- Identify patterns and underlying issues in complex situations and develop solutions using logical and analytical thinking.
- Identify and implement continuous process, system, and structural improvements.
- Communicate clearly with track members, product stakeholders, and peers.
- Provide architectural guidance to product teams and advise on functional, nonfunctional, and architectural requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree.
- 3–5 years of relevant job knowledge.
- Knowledge of building software applications.
- Knowledge of software systems design.
- Experience with end-to-end system ownership.
- Knowledge of technical incident management.
- Knowledge of operations, automation, and toil reduction.
- Knowledge of observability, monitoring, and alerting.
- Critical-thinking skills.
