Stripe is a technology company focused on improving the conditions for economic growth and prosperity. It builds programmable financial infrastructure, reliable APIs, payments and fraud infrastructure, and products used by millions of businesses worldwide.
As an intern at Stripe, you will work on projects across the technology stack that directly impact how businesses operate. You will own problems end to end with support from your manager and teammates, work alongside experienced engineers, and contribute production software at scale. Recent intern projects have included expanding Payments Foundation Model capabilities for generalized anomaly detection, building fraud controls, creating safer payouts, and developing user-facing solutions to prevent pricing mistakes and simplify merchant checkout setup.
The internship program is competitive and expectations are high.
Responsibilities
- Operate as a real member of the team, participating in team discussions, decisions, and the technical design process.
- Write production software with meaningful impact on Stripe's business and users.
- Give and receive technical feedback through code reviews and design discussions.
- Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders to seek and incorporate feedback.
- Learn quickly by asking effective questions and working with your intern manager and teammates.
- Communicate work status clearly.
- Use the latest AI tooling to accelerate development.
Requirements
- Strong fundamental understanding of computer science through pursuit of a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Programming experience gained through side projects or coursework. Stripe primarily uses Ruby, Java, JavaScript, Go, and Scala, but candidates can learn new languages when they have strong fundamentals and general knowledge.
- Experience from previous internships or other multi-person projects, including open-source contributions, demonstrating the ability to evaluate and receive feedback from mentors, peers, and stakeholders.
- Ability to learn unfamiliar systems and develop an understanding of them through independent research and collaboration with mentors or subject-matter experts.
- Ability to use AI tools to accelerate development while applying critical thinking and professional judgment to review, refine, and validate outputs.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least one year of university education or equivalent work experience.
- Specialized knowledge in one or more areas, such as frontend, backend, infrastructure, or other technologies, balanced with general technical skills and knowledge.
- Experience writing high-quality pull requests with good test coverage and completing projects with minimal defects.
- Familiarity with navigating and managing work in new codebases containing multiple languages.
- Clear written communication skills, including the ability to explain work to stakeholders, team members, and colleagues.
