Staff Enterprise Architect

GitLab is seeking a Staff Enterprise Architect to design and evolve the configuration, integration, performance, and scalability of its internal systems. Reporting to the Director of Enterprise Architecture and AI Intelligent Automation, this individual will apply business, application, data, and technology architecture principles, with AI considered across each domain. The role leads through architecture rather than people management and partners with Applications Engineering, Integration, RPA, Intelligent Automation, Data, Security, Infrastructure, and enterprise AI teams.

Responsibilities

Business Architecture

• Map current-state processes and capabilities, including supporting systems, owners, and systems of record.
• Identify friction, manual handoffs, duplicated work, and opportunities for AI-assisted process improvement.
• Architect end-to-end processes spanning new product introduction, CPQ, quote-to-cash, billing, revenue recognition, renewals, record-to-report, customer service, case and escalation management, entitlements, and service-level commitments.
• Redesign workflows before automating them and determine which activities should be handled by AI agents, deterministic automation, or people.

Application Architecture

• Produce high-level designs and architecture patterns for Salesforce, NetSuite, Zuora, Zendesk, Workato, and other core platforms.
• Favor configuration and supported extension patterns over customization and evaluate native platform AI before building bespoke solutions.
• Design for maintainability, supportability, observability, error handling, service ownership, runbooks, and total cost of ownership.
• Review platform release notes, limits, API behavior, and known constraints.
• Review significant build proposals, data model changes, and third-party packages while keeping platforms upgradeable and on supported versions.
• Conduct quarterly health checks covering customization, API and governor limits, automation, storage, transaction and ticket volumes, AI consumption, licenses, and ownership of remediation work.

Data Architecture

• Architect data flows across operational and analytical systems, including retrieval and grounding patterns for AI, API-first integrations, event-driven architecture, batch pipelines, data warehouses, and reverse ETL.
• Design data access and handling patterns that meet privacy, data residency, and SOX requirements.
• Define boundaries for what AI models and agents may read, retain, or act on, including field-level controls for sensitive customer and financial data.
• Establish integration and data contracts to protect downstream consumers from upstream schema changes.

Technology Architecture

• Define platform and integration patterns across Workato, identity and access management, secrets handling, and dependent cloud services.
• Define how systems expose capabilities to AI agents through APIs, tool interfaces, and scoped permissions.
• Partner with Infrastructure on reliability, scalability, environment strategy, sandbox and test data management, and non-functional requirements.
• Partner with Security on authentication, authorization, and service-to-service access.
• Evaluate whether use cases should use domain-specific application AI or shared enterprise AI capabilities, considering data sensitivity, reuse, and cost.
• Monitor and optimize cloud and platform consumption, licensing, API limits, and unused or duplicated capacity.

Cross-Functional Architecture

• Produce target-state architectures, decision records, reference patterns, and high-level designs with data models, field mappings, error and retry behavior, failure modes, and AI-output evaluation approaches.
• Ensure designs satisfy SOX, internal control, and security requirements.
• Co-author designs with engineering teams, guide implementation trade-offs, resolve ambiguity, and unblock delivery decisions.
• Build proofs of concept and root-cause difficult production issues.
• Maintain a prioritized technical-debt inventory and drive remediation through funded projects, upgrades, and migrations.
• Participate as a reviewer on the Architecture Review Board.

Requirements

• Deep expertise in application and data architecture, with working fluency in business process and technology architecture.
• Strong hands-on experience with integration, automation, and applied AI, including retrieval-augmented generation, tool calling, agent orchestration on platforms such as Claude, evaluation, and guardrails.
• Experience architecting ERP, CRM, CPQ, billing, financial, and customer-service platforms while maintaining standardization, upgradeability, and SOX compliance.
• Fluency in cross-platform processes such as quote-to-cash and record-to-report.
• Expert knowledge of data modeling, integration architecture patterns, and enterprise API design.
• Practical experience with data warehouses, ELT, ETL, and reverse ETL pipelines.
• Experience with iPaaS tools and operating integrations in production, including cost and consumption optimization.
• Working knowledge of cloud platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to drive architectural change through influence, collaborate with engineering teams, communicate trade-offs to Director and VP stakeholders, and maintain technical positions in review forums.

Team

The Enterprise Architecture team designs, governs, and evolves GitLab's internal technology landscape. The team works with Claude across enterprise systems, guides Applications, Integration, and RPA architecture, and partners with product management, engineering, Sales, Finance, Customer Success, Operations, Data, Security, and Infrastructure teams.
