Staff Forward Deployed Engineer

As a member of Anthropic’s go-to-market team, you will embed directly with strategic customers and lead the technical direction of their AI adoption. You will determine what should be built, guide the architecture and advisory work surrounding those builds, and help customers ship advanced AI applications that solve real-world business problems.

Working closely with Research, Product, and Engineering teams, you will combine engineering expertise, knowledge of frontier AI applications, and customer-facing skills to understand customer workflows and develop innovative solutions while maintaining high standards for safety and reliability. You will guide architecture and build initiatives across multiple workstreams, work with senior technical and business stakeholders, and own outcomes spanning an account’s roadmap.

Responsibilities

• Own technical strategy for a key account or vertical in partnership with account and product teams.
• Guide technical architecture and design decisions across multiple concurrent workstreams.
• Lead discovery and advisory engagements independently, shaping scope and technical strategy before a build begins.
• Lead partner-delivered engagements, setting the architecture and quality bar for work you do not build yourself.
• Review designs and unblock other Forward Deployed Engineers on difficult technical decisions.
• Represent Anthropic to senior technical and business stakeholders, including vice presidents and C-level executives.
• Own engagements end to end: scope the work, sequence it, remove blockers, anticipate security and procurement gates, and deliver production systems customers can operate.
• Build production applications and agent components with Claude within customer systems, and hand over systems customers can run.
• Identify and codify repeatable deployment patterns and contribute insights to Product and Engineering teams.
• Build long-term customer relationships and identify new opportunities for AI deployment throughout the engagement lifecycle.
• Travel frequently to customer sites, approximately 25% of the time.
• Represent and champion Anthropic’s mission in the field.

Requirements

• Deep system design and problem decomposition skills, including the ability to develop secure, production-ready technical strategies for complex enterprise environments with legacy systems, identity and access requirements, and compliance constraints.
• Experience in a senior technical, customer-facing role such as Forward Deployed Engineer or Tech Lead with consulting or product experience. Technical founders are also encouraged to apply.
• A track record of making ambiguous technical decisions through architecture review, pairing, or informal mentorship.
• Experience directly influencing senior technical and business stakeholders, including vice presidents and C-level executives.
• Extensive experience building and operating production systems.
• Hands-on experience with large language models and agents. Side projects and prototypes count.
• Strong programming skills, including proficiency in Python and ideally one or more additional languages such as TypeScript or Java.
• Experience shipping production applications and everyday use of AI coding tools, with the judgment to review and direct their output.
• Experience leading advisory and architecture-review engagements as well as hands-on builds from beginning to end.
• High agency, comfort navigating ambiguity in complex organizations, and the ability to learn new domains and tools quickly.
• Passion for advancing safe, beneficial AI systems through creative technical applications.
• A background in financial services, healthcare/life sciences, or another enterprise vertical is desirable.
• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The field of study must be relevant to the role through coursework, training, or professional experience.

• Annual salary of $280,000–$320,000 USD.
• Hybrid policy requiring staff to work from one of Anthropic’s offices at least 25% of the time; some roles may require more office time.
