Details

Anthropic is looking for a Software Engineer to build and maintain agentic coding tools for developers. The ideal candidate has a passion for developer tools, extensive knowledge of diverse programming environments and languages, and experience with advanced LLM features such as tool use, chaining and orchestration patterns, and prompt engineering. Curiosity about AI research is essential.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain scalable features and infrastructure for AI-powered development tools.
Engage directly with developers inside and outside Anthropic to gather insights and improve user experience.
Collaborate with researchers to improve model capabilities through shared tools and evaluations.
Experiment with new tools, evaluate emerging techniques, and track enhancements to AI-assisted coding capabilities.
Contribute across the stack, from front-end UI to back-end infrastructure, to develop features, fix bugs, and optimize performance.
Work in potentially unfamiliar areas such as Python notebooks, VS Code plug-ins, and containerized environments.

Requirements

Excitement about AI-assisted coding as a way to enhance developer productivity and creativity.
Experience building and maintaining developer tools.
Expert-level React development experience, including performance optimization, modern patterns such as hooks, context, and suspense, and component architecture.
Specialization in user experience engineering combined with full-stack development capabilities.
Hands-on experience with large language models and prompt engineering.
Experience working on projects with stringent safety, security, and/or compliance requirements.
Interest in the societal impacts and ethics of the work.
At least 6 years of work experience.
A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
A field of study relevant to the role, as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Additional Qualifications

Experience building and maintaining CLI tools.
Experience working in large codebases and quickly adapting to unfamiliar development environments.
Experience with container orchestration and cloud infrastructure.
Experience scaling TypeScript projects.
Experience with alternate JavaScript runtimes such as Bun and Deno.

Compensation

The annual salary range is $320,000–$625,000 USD.

Work Policy and Logistics

The role follows a location-based hybrid policy. Staff are expected to work from one of Anthropic's offices at least 25% of the time, although some roles may require more office time.
Anthropic sponsors visas and states that it will make every reasonable effort to obtain a visa for an offer recipient, with support from an immigration lawyer.
