Details

Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Fullstack Engineer to join the Application Core Services (AppCore) Usage squad within the Platform Foundations department. The team builds and operates systems supporting billing, rates, usage calculations, usage visibility, and cloud marketplace integrations.

This is a hands-on Staff engineering role with an initial focus of approximately 75% backend and 25% frontend. You will lead complex technical work, contribute directly to implementation, and share ownership with Staff and Senior engineers. The role involves working across application code, data stores, deployment configuration, and cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate backend services and APIs for billing, rates, usage calculations, usage visibility, and marketplace workflows.
  • Build and maintain backend services primarily in Go, with Node.js also present in the stack.
  • Contribute to TypeScript and React applications to deliver complete features.
  • Improve the correctness and reliability of billing and usage workflows through validation, reconciliation, error handling, and recovery.
  • Replace recurring manual tasks with maintainable automation, operational workflows, and appropriate controls.
  • Maintain Kubernetes workloads, scheduled jobs, cloud resources, and deployment configuration.
  • Use infrastructure as code and automated delivery pipelines to make changes repeatable, reviewable, and safe.
  • Investigate production issues across application code, databases, and infrastructure, including resource exhaustion, failed jobs, slow queries, and replication delays.
  • Plan and execute service deployments, database changes, and infrastructure migrations with validation, monitoring, and recovery plans.
  • Build integrations with cloud marketplaces and external business systems.
  • Deliver projects end to end, from requirements and technical approach through implementation, testing, rollout, and production support.
  • Support auditability and traceability through testable changes and clear explanations of system behavior.
  • Collaborate with product management, Support, DealOps, GTM, infrastructure teams, and adjacent AppCore squads.
  • Provide technical leadership through design discussions, code reviews, mentoring, and practical improvements.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation after onboarding and improve dashboards, alerts, runbooks, and recovery procedures.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience designing, delivering, and operating production backend systems, with the depth and judgment to lead complex work hands-on.
  • Strong experience building and operating production backend systems in Go.
  • Professional experience contributing to frontend applications using TypeScript and React or comparable technologies.
  • Experience with distributed systems, including partial failures, retries, consistency, and service interactions.
  • Experience with relational databases, data modeling, schema migrations, query performance, and safe production changes.
  • Practical experience deploying and troubleshooting containerized services and jobs in Kubernetes.
  • Experience managing cloud infrastructure through code and working with CI/CD pipelines, environment configuration, and controlled rollouts.
  • Ability to investigate production problems using logs, metrics, and traces and turn findings into lasting improvements.
  • Record of delivering projects end to end and following through after release.
  • Experience working remotely with clear asynchronous communication across time zones.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar domains and technologies and take ownership beyond a primary area of expertise.
  • Experience writing readable, well-tested, maintainable software.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call and take responsibility for production systems.
  • Experience supporting colleagues through code reviews, mentoring, and constructive technical discussions.

Bonus Skills

  • Usage metering, billing engines, pricing and rates, financial reconciliation, or customer-facing cost management applications.
  • Operational toil reduction and workflow automation.
  • Auditability, traceability, or financial-control systems.
  • MySQL operations, replication, database upgrades, and performance tuning.
  • Terraform, Jsonnet, Kubernetes deployment configuration, Argo Workflows, or comparable tooling.
  • GCP cloud infrastructure, managed databases, object storage, service accounts, and access controls.
  • Data synchronization pipelines and BigQuery integrations.
  • AWS, Azure, or GCP marketplace integrations.
  • NetSuite or Salesforce integrations.
  • Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, or OpenTelemetry.

Benefits

  • 100% remote work and a global culture.
  • Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
  • Career growth pathways and an innovation-driven, high-trust environment.
  • In-person onboarding.
  • Global annual leave policy of 30 days per annum, including three Grafana shutdown days.

The role is remote, with candidates sought in the United States and Canada. Grafana Labs prefers candidates in NASA's Eastern Time zone to provide overlap with EMEA colleagues.
