Details

Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Fullstack Engineer to join the Application Core Services (AppCore) Usage squad within the Platform Foundations department. The squad builds systems for billing, rates, usage calculations, usage visibility, and cloud marketplace integrations.

This is a hands-on Staff engineering role with an initial focus of approximately 75% backend and 25% frontend. The role involves leading complex technical work, contributing directly to implementation, and owning application code, data stores, deployment configuration, and cloud infrastructure. Grafana Labs is a remote-first, global company and prefers candidates in North American Eastern Time to provide overlap with EMEA colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate backend services and APIs supporting billing, rates, usage calculations, usage visibility, and marketplace workflows.
  • Build and maintain backend services primarily in Go, with Node.js also present in the stack.
  • Contribute to TypeScript and React applications to deliver complete features.
  • Improve the correctness and reliability of billing and usage workflows, including validation, reconciliation, error handling, and recovery.
  • Replace recurring manual tasks with maintainable automation, clear operational workflows, and appropriate controls.
  • Maintain and evolve infrastructure, including Kubernetes workloads, scheduled jobs, cloud resources, and deployment configuration.
  • Use infrastructure as code and automated delivery pipelines to make changes repeatable, reviewable, and safe across environments.
  • Investigate production issues across application code, databases, and infrastructure, including resource exhaustion, failed jobs, slow queries, and replication delays.
  • Plan and execute service deployments, database changes, and infrastructure migrations, including validation, monitoring, and recovery plans.
  • Build and maintain integrations with cloud marketplaces and external business systems.
  • Deliver projects from requirements clarification and technical planning through implementation, testing, rollout, and production support.
  • Make changes traceable and testable to support audit requirements and clear explanations of system behavior.
  • Collaborate with product management, Support, DealOps, GTM, infrastructure teams, and adjacent AppCore squads.
  • Contribute technical leadership through design discussions, code reviews, mentoring, and practical improvements.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation after onboarding and improve dashboards, alert quality, runbooks, and recovery procedures.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience designing, delivering, and operating production backend systems, with the depth and judgment to lead complex work hands-on.
  • Strong experience building and operating production backend systems in Go.
  • Professional experience contributing to frontend applications using TypeScript and React or comparable technologies, with willingness to work across the stack.
  • Experience with distributed systems, including partial failures, retries, consistency, and interactions between services.
  • Experience with relational databases, including data modeling, schema migrations, query performance, and safe production changes.
  • Practical experience deploying and troubleshooting containerized services and jobs in Kubernetes.
  • Experience managing cloud infrastructure through code and working with CI/CD pipelines, environment configuration, and controlled rollouts.
  • Ability to investigate production problems using logs, metrics, and traces and turn findings into lasting improvements.
  • A record of delivering projects end to end, clarifying requirements, making trade-offs, and following through after release.
  • Experience working remotely with clear asynchronous communication and dependable collaboration across time zones.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar domains and technologies and take ownership beyond a primary area of expertise.
  • Experience writing readable, well-tested software that other engineers can understand, maintain, and operate.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call and take responsibility for the production behavior of systems built.
  • Experience supporting colleagues through code reviews, mentoring, and constructive technical discussions.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Usage metering, billing engines, pricing and rates, financial reconciliation, or customer-facing cost management applications.
  • Reducing operational toil and automating workflows involving recurring exceptions or manual interventions.
  • Systems with auditability, traceability, or financial-control requirements.
  • MySQL operations, replication, database upgrades, and performance tuning.
  • Terraform, Jsonnet, and Kubernetes deployment configuration.
  • Argo Workflows or comparable deployment and job-orchestration tooling.
  • Cloud infrastructure involving managed databases, object storage, service accounts, and access controls, particularly on GCP.
  • Data synchronization pipelines and BigQuery integrations.
  • Cloud marketplace integrations across AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Integrations with NetSuite or Salesforce.
  • Observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, or OpenTelemetry.

Benefits

  • Compensation range of $186,368–$223,642 CAD annually in Canada.
  • Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
  • 100% remote, global culture.
  • Career growth pathways and an empowered, high-trust work environment.
  • In-person onboarding.
  • Global annual leave policy of 30 days per year, including three Grafana Shutdown Days, subject to local legislation.
