Staff Software Engineer, Consumer Engineering

Reddit Consumer Engineering builds and scales products that users directly interact with to discover content, participate in communities, and connect with others. Product Backend Engineers partner with Product Managers, Designers, Data Scientists, ML Engineers, and Frontend Engineers to build, experiment with, and scale features supporting content discovery, community engagement, growth, monetization, identity, and security.

This centralized role hires across teams including Core Product & Feeds, Community & Presence, Growth & Engagement, Monetization & Conversion, and Identity & Security.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Product Management, Product Design, Data Science, and iOS, Android, and Web engineers to translate business and user needs into reliable, low-latency technical solutions.
• Own the full software lifecycle for major product initiatives, including technical design documents, API contracts, development, testing, rollout, and observability.
• Design, build, and evaluate A/B experiments.
• Use tools such as BigQuery, HEX, and Firebase to analyze user behavior, conversion funnels, and retention loops and make data-backed engineering decisions.
• Build and maintain scalable APIs and distributed backend services optimized for client consumption and consumer UI performance.
• Establish engineering best practices, improve developer workflows, mentor teammates, and use modern AI-integrated tools to ship high-quality products efficiently.

Requirements

• 7+ years of hands-on backend development experience building and operating large-scale distributed serving systems in high-concurrency environments.
• A user-centric mindset and an understanding of product usability, interaction design, social dynamics, and user growth loops.
• Experience collaborating with Data Scientists and Product Managers to design experiments, establish performance metrics, and iterate based on feedback.
• Ability to work independently and navigate ambiguity in fast-paced product environments while balancing delivery speed and system reliability.
• Outstanding communication skills and experience driving cross-functional alignment in fully remote or hybrid team environments.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages such as Go or Python; Java, Kotlin, Rust, and C++ are also applicable.
• Expertise designing and maintaining scalable APIs using GraphQL, REST, or gRPC for native mobile and web applications.
• Experience with high-throughput caching layers and distributed datastores such as Redis, Cassandra, and PostgreSQL.
• Experience or interest in using AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate development workflows.

In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for equity in the form of restricted stock units and may be eligible for commission depending on the position offered.
