Details
This is an opportunity to join a technology-focused market-making business in the foreign exchange (FX) trading space. As an Engineering Expert within the FX Engineering team, you will combine deep technical expertise with engineering leadership to help shape trading technology and the engineering organisation supporting it.
The role sits at the intersection of technology and the trading business. You will work closely with Trading, Sales, and engineering teams, influence the evolution of a critical FX platform, and help shape engineering culture, practices, and technical direction. The platform supports real-time trading workflows where performance, resilience, and operational stability are critical.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and operation of enterprise-scale Java applications supporting the FX technology ecosystem.
- Partner with Trading, Sales, and technology teams to translate business needs into robust and scalable solutions.
- Build and evolve low-latency, multithreaded applications using modern Java engineering practices.
- Drive solutions across pricing, risk management, trade execution, and post-trade processing.
- Own applications across the full lifecycle, from architecture and delivery through production support and continuous improvement.
- Maintain high standards of reliability, performance, observability, and operational excellence.
- Identify opportunities to simplify architecture, reduce risk, and improve system resilience.
- Troubleshoot complex production issues and coordinate resolution across multiple systems and teams.
- Provide technical leadership through design reviews, code reviews, architecture discussions, and hands-on contribution.
- Coach and mentor engineers, helping them develop technical expertise, engineering judgment, and accountability.
- Foster collaboration between engineering teams and Financial Markets stakeholders.
- Help shape engineering culture, raise technical standards, and establish effective ways of working.
- Champion modern engineering practices, including AI-assisted software development tools and techniques.
Working Environment
You will work in a collaborative and international DevOps team within ABN AMRO's Financial Markets division. The role combines software engineering and business interaction, with direct impact on Foreign Exchange trading applications. The environment is technically challenging, fast-paced, and focused on teamwork, knowledge sharing, continuous learning, and end-to-end ownership. Hybrid working applies, with approximately three days per week in the office.
Requirements
Essential Experience
- 7–10 years of experience designing, building, and supporting enterprise software solutions in Java.
- Strong hands-on experience with Java 17 or later and the Spring ecosystem, including Spring Boot.
- Proven experience building scalable, distributed, multithreaded, and low-latency applications.
- Experience working within Financial Markets technology, ideally supporting front-office trading workflows.
- Ability to translate complex business requirements into practical, maintainable technical solutions.
- Experience leading technical initiatives and influencing engineering direction across teams.
- Experience supporting applications across the full software lifecycle, including architecture, delivery, production support, and continuous improvement.
- Strong understanding of software engineering practices, including code reviews, automated testing, observability, and operational excellence.
- Experience coaching, mentoring, or leading engineers in a technical leadership capacity.
Education
An advanced degree in a relevant field, such as Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a comparable discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
Desirable Experience
- Knowledge of Foreign Exchange trading and market-making environments.
- Understanding of pricing, risk management, trade execution, and post-trade workflows.
- Experience with the FIX protocol and integration with electronic trading platforms.
- Experience developing and operating solutions on Microsoft Azure.
- Experience working in DevOps environments, including incident management, monitoring, release management, and production support.
- Interest in quantitative engineering and solving complex technical or financial challenges.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot.
