The Engineering Manager primarily manages, coaches, and develops an engineering team, ensuring that individual and team development align with organizational objectives and direction. The role manages engineering activities related to designing new products and modifying existing designs, ensuring that deliverables are completed on time and to an acceptable quality standard.
The role also analyzes technology trends, human resource needs, and market demand to plan projects that support resilience and current and future business ambitions. The Engineering Manager works with leaders, production teams, key stakeholders, and marketing teams to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, scalability, and time to market for new and existing products.
Responsibilities
Managing People
- Inspire, grow, and develop individuals by helping create personal development plans, leveraging learning resources, and offering stretch opportunities.
- Manage underperformance by setting and reviewing performance objectives and KPIs, providing timely feedback, and collaborating with HR counterparts.
Managing Teams
- Take ownership, act proactively, and collaborate with business counterparts, peers, other craft managers, and stakeholders.
- Ensure delivery by tracking team health metrics and KPIs, monitoring roadmap progress, identifying blockers, and resolving or escalating them.
- Manage team stakeholders by reporting progress and blockers clearly and promptly.
- Plan and manage headcount by participating in recruitment efforts and planning processes with the team.
Coaching and Mentoring
- Coach, guide, and improve the performance of stakeholders and colleagues at all levels by sharing experience, knowledge, and effective approaches to work.
End-to-End System Ownership
- Own services end to end by monitoring application health and performance, setting and monitoring relevant metrics, acting when thresholds are violated, and guiding junior team members.
- Reduce business continuity risks and bus factor by applying current practices and tools and writing documentation such as runbooks and OpDocs.
- Reduce risk and obtain customer feedback through continuous delivery and experimentation frameworks.
- Independently manage applications or services through deployment and production operations.
Technical Incident Management
- Address and resolve live production issues while mitigating customer impact within SLA.
- Improve system reliability through long-term solutions and root cause analysis.
- Contribute to postmortem processes and maintain records of live issues.
Building Software Applications
- Build software applications using relevant development languages and appropriate systems, services, and tools.
- Write readable and reusable code using standard patterns and libraries.
- Refactor and simplify code by introducing design patterns when appropriate.
- Ensure application quality through standard testing techniques and methods aligned with the test strategy.
- Maintain data security, integrity, and quality by following company standards and best practices.
Architectural Guidance
- Advise product teams on technical solutions that meet functional, nonfunctional, and architectural requirements.
- Challenge application design rationale and provide context within the broader architectural landscape.
- Set direction for technical capabilities by evaluating and aligning target architecture improvements and reframing architectural designs and decisions for different stakeholders.
Critical Thinking
- Identify patterns and underlying issues in complex situations and find solutions using logical and analytical thinking.
- Evaluate and develop ideas, plans, and solutions objectively by incorporating external knowledge, initiating SMART improvements, and explaining their rationale.
Continuous Quality and Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities for process, system, and structural improvements, including performance gains, by examining current process flows, methods, and standards.
- Design and implement improvements by defining adapted or new process flows, standards, and practices that enable business performance.
Effective Communication
- Deliver clear, well-structured, and meaningful information to target audiences using suitable communication methods and language.
- Achieve mutually agreeable solutions through adaptability, clear communication, and active listening.
- Ask relevant follow-up questions to engage effectively with speakers and understand their viewpoints.
