Engineering Manager, AI Observability

Anthropic is seeking an experienced engineering manager to lead a team building tools that use Claude and other AI systems to analyze large, unstructured datasets and produce structured, trustworthy insights. The team's tools support enforcement, threat intelligence investigations, model audits, and other AI safety work.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of AI-based monitoring systems for AI training and deployment.
• Extend and improve core frameworks for processing large volumes of unstructured text.
• Partner with researchers and safety teams across Anthropic to understand analytical needs and prioritize solutions.
• Develop agentic integrations that allow AI systems to autonomously investigate and act on analytical findings.
• Contribute to the team's strategic direction, including decisions about what to build, what to partner on, and where to invest.
• Coach and support direct reports in understanding and pursuing their professional growth.
• Run recruiting efforts, including growing the team as needed.
• Design processes that help the team operate effectively.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of engineering management experience and an active interest in people management.
• At least 5 years of software engineering experience, with meaningful exposure to machine learning systems.
• Interest in scaling human oversight of AI systems.
• Familiarity with large language model application development, including context engineering, evaluation, and orchestration.
• Experience building tools used by others, with attention to user experience, reliability, and documentation.
• Ability to work across deep infrastructure and user-facing product development.
• Ability to thrive in collaborative, cross-functional environments.
• A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in a relevant field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Research experience in AI safety, alignment, or responsible deployment.
• Strong people management experience, including coaching, performance evaluation, mentorship, and career development.
• Experience recruiting for an engineering team, including predicting staffing needs, designing interview loops, evaluating candidates, and closing candidates.
• Practical experience with data science and engineering, including developing and using large-scale data processing frameworks.
• Experience productionizing internal tools or building developer-facing platforms.
• Experience building monitoring or observability systems.
• Comfort working in an ambiguous environment on a small, growing team.

Compensation and Logistics

• Annual salary: $405,000–$850,000 USD.
• Anthropic expects staff to work from one of its offices at least 25% of the time, although some roles may require more office time.
• Anthropic sponsors visas, although sponsorship availability may vary by role and candidate.
