Engineering Manager, API Multicloud

API Multicloud partners with cloud service providers to bring OpenAI’s frontier models and APIs into the cloud environments where developers and enterprises build. The team owns the API end to end across cloud platforms, including API integration, request routing, inference execution, capacity management, and operations.

The role leads the team responsible for building and operating OpenAI’s API across major cloud service providers. The team develops scalable, reliable, and efficient cloud deployment platforms, including model-serving environments and reusable systems for expanding across cloud platforms.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team responsible for OpenAI’s API infrastructure across multiple cloud providers.
• Define the technical vision, strategy, and roadmap for API Multicloud.
• Drive the architecture and execution of distributed systems supporting API routing, model serving, and cloud infrastructure across cloud service provider environments.
• Partner with inference, API, infrastructure, security, Safety Systems, and cloud service provider engineering teams.
• Launch new models, expand platform capabilities, and deliver reliable production services.
• Own platform reliability, performance, and operational excellence.
• Improve capacity planning, infrastructure efficiency, and deployment processes.
• Recruit and develop engineering talent while fostering technical excellence, ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Set priorities, navigate ambiguity, and drive cross-functional execution while balancing near-term needs with long-term technical investments.

Requirements

• Experience leading, building, and developing high-performing engineering teams responsible for large-scale cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, or platform engineering.
• Strong technical background in distributed systems and cloud infrastructure, with the ability to drive architectural decisions and provide technical guidance to senior engineers.
• Experience building and operating production infrastructure on major cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
• Proven experience leading complex, cross-functional engineering initiatives from architecture through production launch and ongoing operations.
• Strong understanding of scalability, reliability, performance optimization, and infrastructure efficiency in large-scale production environments.
• Demonstrated ability to hire, mentor, and develop engineering talent.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, including experience influencing technical direction across engineering teams and external partners.
• Experience with AI infrastructure, inference systems, or model serving is a plus.
