Details

Anthropic is seeking an engineering manager to lead the Safe Change team, which builds continuous-deployment and feature-flagging systems for safely and reliably moving application code, infrastructure, and runtime configuration into production. The platform supports staged promotion, health checks, progressive rollouts, runtime behavior changes, and safe configuration deployment across Anthropic's services.

The team is expanding the platform to support configuration changes, additional deployment surfaces, progressive rollouts, and a company-wide golden path for safe deployments. The role involves leading infrastructure used by engineers across Anthropic and partnering with product, inference, security, and infrastructure teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a team of engineers building continuous-deployment, configuration, and feature-flagging platforms, owning planning, execution, and delivery against key milestones.
  • Set technical direction for the safe deployment of code, infrastructure, and configuration across Anthropic's services.
  • Partner with product, inference, security, and infrastructure teams to migrate services onto the paved path and make safe deployment the default.
  • Drive the roadmap for progressive rollouts, health-check automation, first-class configuration deployment, and expansion to new deployment surfaces.
  • Define and track metrics measuring deployment safety and speed, and hold the team accountable to them.
  • Create clarity for the team and stakeholders in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment where the platform is still being built out.
  • Take an inclusive, equitable approach to hiring, coaching, and career development while sustaining a high-performing, healthy team.
  • Represent the team across the engineering organization and contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Anthropic's engineering management group.

Requirements

  • Experience managing and growing a team of software engineers.
  • A hands-on software engineering background as an individual contributor before moving into management.
  • Experience building or operating backend, distributed, or infrastructure systems in production.
  • Working knowledge of modern deployment and cloud-native tooling, including CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create clarity across teams.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The field of study must be relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of engineering management experience, including leading infrastructure, platform, or developer-experience teams.
  • Experience owning continuous delivery, release engineering, or deployment-safety systems.
  • Familiarity with progressive delivery techniques such as canary or blue-green deployments and automated rollback.
  • Experience with feature-flagging or experimentation platforms.
  • A background in observability, health checking, or incident response, with a track record of improving production reliability.
  • Experience treating configuration as a first-class, safely deployed artifact.
  • A track record of building a culture of belonging and engineering excellence.
  • Low ego, high empathy, and a habit of leading by example.

Compensation

  • Annual salary: $405,000–$485,000 USD.

Benefits and Logistics

  • Staff are currently expected to work from one of Anthropic's offices at least 25% of the time, although some roles may require more office time.
  • Anthropic sponsors visas and retains an immigration lawyer to assist with visa applications, although sponsorship may not be possible for every role and candidate.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and an office space for collaboration.
