About the Team

The Intelligence and Investigations team seeks to rapidly detect and disrupt abuse in AI technologies to ensure their safe use. The team identifies emerging abuse trends, analyzes risks, and works with internal partners to implement mitigation strategies to protect against misuse. Their efforts contribute to OpenAI's goal of developing AI that benefits all of humanity.

Role overview

As an Intelligence Systems Engineer, you will advance Intelligence & Investigations efforts at OpenAI to ensure the safe and responsible use of AI across products and services. You will prototype, develop, and maintain tools and processes that integrate OpenAI's models and infrastructure to help internal teams make sense of large, open-domain datasets, fight abuse, and inform high-stakes decisions. You will serve as a technical bridge between data scientists, subject matter experts, and technical teams (Platform Integrity, Safety Systems, Research) and lead development of tools for scaled collections, investigations, and analysis.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA and uses a hybrid work model (3 days in office per week). OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.

Responsibilities

  • Prototype, build, and maintain at-scale intelligence systems that detect, triage, and monitor targeted signals from open-source and internal data
  • Analyze requirements and deliver end-to-end solutions addressing complex intelligence challenges while ensuring code quality and scalability
  • Act as a technical bridge between Intelligence needs and teams such as Platform Integrity, Safety Systems, and Research
  • Contribute to technical strategy and design user interfaces for non-technical investigators and analysts
  • Prototype applications to automate team workflows and route leads
  • Report on scaled impact using advanced data analysis and visualization products
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to address technical intelligence needs

Requirements / Desired qualifications

  • Experience in engineering and project management, ideally focused on security, intelligence, or data analysis products
  • Strong technical background and a proven track record building and maintaining systems that enable users to make sense of large, open-domain datasets, fight abuse, and inform high-stakes decisions
  • Proficiency in data analysis, SQL, and Python
  • Experience applying AI / novel ML techniques for problem-solving
  • Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams, manage complex product ecosystems, and deliver results in a fast-paced and sometimes ambiguous environment
  • Outstanding communication skills and a commitment to continuous learning
