Details

OpenAI’s Engineering Acceleration team builds products that multiply the effectiveness of technical teams, helping engineers, researchers, and product teams understand complex systems, learn from what they ship, and operate reliably at scale.

The role focuses on designing two connected product areas: a real-time data exploration and observability experience for investigating large-scale system and product behavior, and an experimentation platform for safely launching changes, measuring impact, and deciding whether to ramp, iterate, or roll back. The designer will define interaction models that turn vague questions or unexpected signals into trustworthy answers and clear next steps, while establishing consistent patterns across enterprise and internal tools and supporting AI-native workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end design for data-intensive products used by engineers, researchers, and product teams.
  • Shape the complete learning loop: instrument, launch, observe, investigate, evaluate, decide, and iterate.
  • Create workflows for querying, filtering, comparison, drill-down, visualization, alerting, and sharing.
  • Make complex concepts such as data freshness, coverage, reliability, uncertainty, experiment assignment, metric validity, rollout state, and regressions understandable and actionable.
  • Partner with engineering, data science, research, and product management to translate technical infrastructure into coherent product experiences.
  • Use prototyping, research, and rigorous design exploration to establish interaction patterns for emerging technical and AI-native workflows.
  • Define shared systems and patterns across OpenAI’s enterprise and internal tools.
  • Establish a high bar for information architecture, visual hierarchy, interaction quality, and craft across complex, multi-surface products.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience owning data products, observability platforms, experimentation systems, analytics products, developer tools, AI/ML tooling, or similarly technical workflows.
  • Strong product and systems thinking, with the ability to set direction in ambiguous spaces and make durable interaction and platform decisions.
  • Ability to make dense information calm, legible, and useful without oversimplifying important complexity.
  • Technical fluency and the ability to understand underlying systems and build credibility with engineers and other technical users.
  • Understanding of how provenance, reliability, uncertainty, permissions, and edge cases affect trust in system output.
  • Experience redesigning workflows spanning multiple tools, products, or surfaces and creating coherence across a broader ecosystem.
  • Strong UX/UI and interaction design skills, with a high bar for visual craft and information design.
  • Ability to demonstrate how design work changed product decisions, accelerated learning, or improved team velocity.
  • Willingness to stay close to detailed workflows and hands-on design while shaping broader product vision.
  • Interest in defining how engineers and AI agents will build, evaluate, and improve software together.

Benefits

  • Base salary of $245,000–$310,000 per year.
  • Equity, performance-related bonuses for eligible employees, and benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Paid parental, medical, and caregiver leave.
  • Paid time off, company holidays, and office closures.
  • Mental health and wellness support.
  • Employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend.
  • Daily office meals and eligible meal delivery credits.
  • Relocation support for eligible employees.

The role is based in OpenAI’s Seattle, Washington or San Francisco, California offices and has a hybrid workplace model.
