AI @ 7 Machine Learning @ 7 Reinforcement Learning @ 4

Details

The Health team within OpenAI's Personal AGI organization works to ensure that artificial general intelligence improves health for humanity. The team works across the model stack, including pretraining, midtraining, reinforcement learning, post-training, evaluations, harnessing, and deployment, connecting research to patients, clinicians, and real-world outcomes.

This role focuses on building frontier health capabilities and turning them into measurable improvements in models and products. The position is based in San Francisco, California, and follows a hybrid work model requiring three days in the office per week.

Responsibilities

  • Own a high-leverage research direction end to end, from selecting important problems and defining measurements through designing experiments, running them, and integrating successful work into frontier models.
  • Develop scalable methods across pretraining, midtraining, reinforcement learning, and post-training to improve health reasoning, knowledge, reliability, calibration, and behavior.
  • Build and study reinforcement learning environments grounded in real health problems.
  • Evaluate which data and training setups produce robust, generalizable improvements rather than only higher benchmark scores.
  • Create meaningful, trustworthy, and unsaturated evaluations to determine whether models are improving in areas that matter to patients and clinicians.
  • Advance new capabilities in health that may have increasing impact as model intelligence and test-time compute improve.
  • Develop models and agents that work with longitudinal, multimodal health data to produce useful predictions, generate scientific insights, and support individual- and population-level decisions.
  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, clinicians, and product teams to bring health capabilities into models and products used by hundreds of millions of people.
  • Help establish that AI improves real health outcomes, not only that it can produce impressive answers or demonstrations.

Requirements

  • A strong track record in machine learning or AI research, with the depth to advance at least one important area: pretraining, reinforcement learning or post-training, evaluations, or a frontier health or biomedical AI problem.
  • Hands-on ability to design experiments, write and debug code, work directly with data and training infrastructure, and move quickly from an idea to evidence.
  • Strong research judgment and the ability to distinguish important problems and promising approaches from merely interesting ones.
  • Ability to take ownership of ambiguous problems end to end and learn whatever is needed to complete the work.
  • A goal-oriented approach and willingness to do high-leverage work, including unglamorous tasks.
  • Focus on whether capabilities scale, generalize, and reach the real world rather than only appearing in papers or prototypes.
  • Ability to collaborate with ambitious, low-ego colleagues across research, engineering, medicine, and product.
  • Commitment to using increasingly capable AI to improve human health and deploying it safely.
  • Experience with health AI, longitudinal health data, or clinical research is a bonus.

Benefits

  • Base salary of $295,000-$555,000 per year.
  • Equity and performance-related bonuses for eligible employees.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
  • Pre-tax accounts for health, dependent care, and commuter expenses.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Paid parental, medical, and caregiver leave.
  • Paid time off, paid company holidays, office closures, and paid sick or safe time.
  • Mental health and wellness support.
  • Employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend.
  • Daily office meals and eligible meal delivery credits.
  • Relocation support for eligible employees.
  • Additional taxable fringe benefits may include charitable donation matching and wellness stipends.
