Details

The Intelligence and Investigations team provides intelligence to decision-makers across OpenAI and investigates severe misuse of its products. The team uses investigations and analysis of diverse data sources to provide actionable quantitative and qualitative intelligence to OpenAI leadership. Analysts and investigators work with engineers who build tools supporting investigative work.

The service designer will shape how investigative cases move through OpenAI, from the first signal through review and action. The role involves working with investigators, operational teams, and engineers to understand investigative workflows, identify improvements, and put those changes into practice.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside investigators to understand how cases move across teams and systems, considering the impact on people at risk, people whose activity is under review, and those responsible for acting on findings.
  • Combine insights from individual cases with operational data to determine where changes would have the greatest impact and whether improvements should focus on workflows, tools, or both.
  • Lead cross-team work to map investigative workflows, design improvements with the people who use and operate them, and implement agreed changes.
  • Guide engineering decisions about how investigative systems fit together to support the overall workflow.
  • Follow changes into use and assess whether they help investigators act in time, make well-supported decisions, and sustain demanding work.

Requirements

  • Experience designing services around the needs of the people who use and operate them.
  • Ability to learn how specialist teams work and synthesize different perspectives to understand services that no single team sees in full.
  • Experience working with operational and engineering teams to put service designs into practice.
  • Comfort discussing how technical choices in one part of a workflow affect people elsewhere.
  • Interest in evaluating how design changes perform after implementation and whether they improve the full investigation workflow.
