Details

Grafana Labs is hiring a Senior Backend Software Engineer to work remotely from the United States or Canada. The role is part of the Databases organization, which owns and operates telemetry databases including Mimir for metrics, Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, and Pyroscope for profiles. These are multi-tenant distributed systems implemented in Go and operated at scale on Kubernetes across AWS, GCP, and Azure.

Responsibilities

Influence the product roadmap and define career objectives.
Work with the team to deliver new features and iterate based on results.
Drive projects from initial idea through production operations.
Contribute to open-source projects beyond the direct scope of the team.
Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, with ownership of reliability, performance, and availability.
Participate in follow-the-sun on-call rotations and take ownership of operated services.
Support team members, participate in design discussions, and collaborate in a fully remote environment.
Develop a deeper understanding of Grafana Cloud, its customers, and the codebase of a large distributed system.
Write and review pull requests and design documents.
Shepherd automated release rollouts and contribute to performance and reliability improvements.

Requirements

Ability to break down complex challenges, build modular solutions, deliver MVPs, gather feedback, and iterate.
Strong collaboration and communication skills in a fully remote setup.
Solid experience with at least one programming language. Grafana Labs uses Go; familiarity with Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar languages is also relevant.
Experience delivering projects from requirements gathering and brainstorming through product release.
Experience developing cloud software or working in systems engineering.
Experience with on-call responsibilities and the DevOps model.
Experience writing clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
Familiarity with observability systems and the use of metrics, logs, and traces for debugging.

Nice to Have

Experience with Kubernetes.
Experience with queue systems such as the Kafka protocol.
Experience using Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles, including on-call work or hobby and homelab projects.
Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or a desire to learn.
Familiarity with infrastructure as code.
