Details

The Bloomberg Managed Services organization creates and curates Bloomberg Engineering's software-as-a-service catalog and infrastructure. The BMS Streaming team provides streaming solutions on the BMS Platform, powered by Apache Kafka and its ecosystem. The role involves building reusable, efficient solutions that impact engineering products across Bloomberg.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate within an Agile, multidisciplinary team.
  • Develop code around the Apache Kafka broker and its client libraries, including C/C++, Java, and Python.
  • Work with Kafka ecosystem frameworks such as Kafka Connect, Kafka Streams, Cruise Control, and Burrow.
  • Work on open-source projects within the Kafka ecosystem and contribute changes upstream.
  • Develop an end-to-end, full-stack user experience.
  • Learn and experiment with new frameworks and build software that works across various environments.
  • Anticipate the needs of Bloomberg engineers and build suitable solutions.
  • Collaborate with product owners and application teams to understand requirements, conduct feature demonstrations, and provide system design consultations.
  • Identify technology feature gaps and work with the open-source community and vendors to co-design and co-develop features and bug fixes.
  • Follow the team's software development lifecycle practices, including Docker-based unit testing, Jenkins integration, and API documentation standards.

Requirements

  • 4 or more years of production programming experience in Java, C++, Python, Go, Scala, or a similar language.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a similar field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, data structures, algorithms, and system design.
  • Experience designing and implementing low-latency, high-volume, and highly available distributed systems.
  • Commitment to writing meaningful unit and integration tests.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passion for distributed systems and large-scale data systems.
  • Familiarity with Apache Kafka, Kubernetes, and Docker.
  • Java programming experience.
  • Experience maintaining and contributing to large open-source projects.
  • Experience evolving and monitoring systems at scale.
  • Deep understanding of TCP/IP, Unix networking, and Linux kernel performance.
