About proficiency levels:
- 1-2 — basic awareness. Minimal hands-on experience, and a rudimentary understanding of the technology's purpose;
- 3-6 — daily use. Comfortable and regular usage, capable of handling common tasks and challenges related to the technology;
- 7-9 — you are an expert, you can teach others, you know all the pitfalls and tricks;
- 10 — exceptional knowledge, comprehensive understanding, and adeptness in all aspects of the technology, including advanced problem-solving. Think twice before claiming or demanding such level.

Details
Bloomberg Media empowers global business leaders with breaking news, expert opinion, and proprietary data distributed worldwide. The Media API Platform team builds and operates the API layer at the heart of Bloomberg Media's digital products, enabling engineers to deliver reliable, scalable, and secure APIs quickly.
The team operates an internal GraphQL gateway composed of more than a dozen subgraphs spanning user and media domains, as well as a public GraphQL gateway for client-facing applications secured with pre-approved queries. The platform also provides shared infrastructure for centralized authentication and authorization, rate limiting, token management, and job management.
The team builds automated regression suites, nightly and post-deployment testing, daily test reports, observability tooling, and AI-assisted tools for identifying latency regressions. The platform serves millions of users worldwide and handles up to 300,000 requests per minute.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert GraphQL guidance to client development teams on best practices.
- Grow the graph securely to support future agentic clients.
- Develop and promote internal and open-source GraphQL tooling for seamless deployments and adoption of a well-governed federated graph.
- Implement agentic workflows to improve graph quality and development speed.
- Drive organization-wide identity and access management adoption, advanced observability, and improvements to job scheduling services for critical offline workflows.
- Analyze open-source and vendor products to advise on buy-versus-build decisions.
- Partner with product and content teams across the organization.
- Lead technical decisions and design robust APIs.
- Build and maintain API gateways, centralized authentication, rate limiting, token management, and other shared infrastructure.
- Mentor engineers and help teams design their graphs and APIs effectively.
- Build fine-grained graph caching systems and optimize response times for high-throughput, low-latency applications.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience building and operating backend services in production, including ownership of systems relied upon by other teams.
- Expertise in at least one of JavaScript/TypeScript with Node.js, Java, Kotlin, or Python.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, including service-to-service communication, caching, rate limiting, failure modes, and reliability at scale.
- Current hands-on use of AI-assisted and agentic engineering tools.
- Experience debugging production issues at web scale.
- Familiarity with HTTP, DNS, TLS, proxies, load balancers, and observability tools such as logs, metrics, and traces.
- Strong cross-team collaboration skills and the ability to work in other teams' codebases and domains.
- Experience with automated testing, CI/CD, engineering standards, and technical documentation.
- Clear written and spoken communication skills.
- A track record of mentoring engineers and leading technical decisions.
Nice to Have
- Hands-on GraphQL experience, particularly Apollo Federation, schema design, and subgraph development.
- Experience with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
- Experience with authentication and authorization systems, including OAuth, JWT, service identity, or IAM.
- Experience with AWS and container-based deployment.
