Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Platform (Core AI Automation)

Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.”

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Platform Core Automation team, you will build AI infrastructure and agentic systems that automate customer support and compliance operations. The team is reimagining these processes with AI systems that handle workflows end-to-end, resolve customer issues, and execute compliance tasks autonomously. You will own the design and delivery of LLM-powered systems, grounding techniques, and integration pipelines that reduce resolution times and costs while improving accuracy across millions of customer interactions.

Responsibilities

• Own the design and delivery of agentic AI systems for customer support and compliance automation, from LLM orchestration through production deployment and monitoring.
• Build scalable, secure backend infrastructure in Python and Golang for AI workloads, including model integration pipelines, guardrails, grounding mechanisms, and measurement frameworks.
• Drive end-to-end execution of complex AI initiatives and make technical trade-offs across latency, accuracy, cost, and reliability.
• Partner with Customer Experience, Compliance, and product engineering teams to identify high-impact automation opportunities and translate operational challenges into AI-powered solutions.
• Lead code reviews and mentor engineers on AI system design patterns.
• Participate in on-call rotations and incident response.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, with proven expertise designing, building, and maintaining production services using a microservices architecture.
• Hands-on experience building LLM-based applications or AI/ML systems in production, including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or agentic AI frameworks.
• Proficiency in Python and Golang or comparable backend languages, with experience integrating third-party AI models and APIs into production workflows.
• A track record of delivering end-to-end projects with measurable business impact in ambiguous problem spaces.
• Experience building data pipelines, integrating with external vendors, or working with large-scale unstructured data sources such as blockchain data and customer interaction logs.
• Ability to use generative AI responsibly, maintain human oversight, and deliver business-ready outputs that improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Nice to Have

• Experience working through rapid company growth, such as scaling from startup to mid-size.
• Familiarity with GenAI frameworks and tools, Python, Golang, Docker, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
• Background in AI/LLM infrastructure.

Compensation

The annual base salary range, excluding equity and bonus, is $186,065–$218,900 USD. Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
