Coinbase is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join the Retail DEX team within the Consumer & Business group. The team operates the data and trading systems that power onchain decentralized exchange trading within the main Coinbase app, enabling millions of traders to buy and sell more than 70 million tokens on major blockchains, including Base and Solana. The role involves building systems that connect off-chain and onchain environments to provide a unified trading experience.
Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only, company. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.”
Responsibilities
- Integrate new blockchains, decentralized exchanges, and launchpads into the Coinbase app to unlock more onchain assets for millions of traders.
- Design and implement first-party smart contracts for onchain trading primitives, including DEX aggregation and advanced order types, to improve execution quality and capabilities.
- Scale real-time data pipelines to handle more than 100,000 messages per second with millisecond-latency processing of blockchain market data.
- Optimize the trading stack end-to-end to provide fast execution, optimal fills, and comprehensive asset coverage for DEX traders.
- Drive iteration on agentic-first development patterns by building self-improving software systems and tooling that accelerate team velocity.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of backend software engineering experience, including demonstrated success building and operating production data systems or data pipelines.
- Hands-on experience designing data-intensive systems and integrating with large-scale data infrastructure such as Kafka, ClickHouse, StarRocks, Temporal, and Redis.
- Proven experience designing and integrating onchain smart contracts on EVM platforms, including Ethereum or Base, or on Solana, with a deep understanding of the programming models of one or more of these virtual machines.
- Demonstrated ability to build, iterate on, and improve agentic-first code repositories and software systems in production environments.
- Ability to use generative AI responsibly, maintain human oversight, and deliver business-ready outputs while improving workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
Compensation
The annual base salary range is $186,065–$218,900 USD, excluding equity and bonus. Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
