Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.”

As a Senior Software Engineer within the Security Platform Engineering group, you will serve as the primary execution anchor for critical regulatory and cryptographic initiatives. The team owns Coinbase’s public and internal certificate management systems, which underpin all Coinbase systems. You will lead the development of high-availability services that provide novel certificate capabilities for internal teams and external partners.

Responsibilities

Lead the architecture and execution of critical cryptographic infrastructure.
Define technical strategies with a multi-quarter horizon and clarify highly ambiguous requirements for novel cryptographic solutions.
Own risky and ambitious initiatives, implementing secure and resilient cryptographic protocols in a high-stakes, zero-trust environment.
Shape engineering quality practices as a technical anchor and mentor within a team of senior engineers.
Drive rigorous code reviews and eliminate single points of failure.
Build alignment and secure commitment from cross-functional partners across Security, Product, and Policy.

Requirements

5+ years of software engineering experience, with demonstrated success building highly available, distributed systems.
Deep expertise in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and applied cryptography.
Proven experience operating certificate authorities and automating X.509 certificate lifecycles, including issuance, renewal, revocation, and trust-chain distribution.
Experience safely protecting private key material with Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) or cloud Key Management Services (KMS).
Extensive programming experience in systems languages such as Golang, Java, C++, or Rust, with the ability to work in a Golang-heavy environment.
Experience operating Tier-0 or highly critical infrastructure where resilience, security, and low latency are essential.
Experience leading a team’s technical strategy, architecture, and deliverables for large-scale projects.
Ability to navigate complex regulatory requirements and translate them into robust engineering solutions.
Responsible use of generative AI, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Compensation

Annual base salary ranges from $186,065 to $218,900 USD, excluding equity and bonus. Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
