About the Team
The Payments Team is working to make AGI financially sustainable by enabling OpenAI to accept payments across existing products, including ChatGPT, ChatGPT for Teams, and the API, while supporting future commercial experiences. The team owns the user-facing payments experience, direct integrations with payment service providers, and supporting infrastructure for checkout and payment flows. Payments collaborates with Finance, Legal, Growth, Product, external vendors, and other teams to ensure the infrastructure scales with the business and supports evolving commercial goals.
About the Role
As a Software Engineer on the Payments Team, you will design and build core payment systems, partner with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable solutions, and ensure financial systems support rapid product iteration and global reach. The role involves building infrastructure that supports OpenAI's financial systems, long-term mission, and sustainability.
This role is based in San Francisco, California. OpenAI uses a hybrid work model requiring three days in the office per week and offers relocation assistance to new employees.
Responsibilities
- Architect, implement, and scale core payment infrastructure.
- Build robust and extensible financial primitives to enable rapid iteration and support hyper-growth.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including Finance, GTM, and Product, to translate business requirements into clean, scalable technical systems.
- Demonstrate strong ownership to ship changes in the highly regulated payments domain.
- Create a seamless checkout experience around the world.
- Improve the reliability, observability, and auditability of money movement at OpenAI.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally focused on payments or financial systems at scale.
- Familiarity with payment processors such as Stripe, Adyen, or Braintree, or experience building similar internal financial systems involving cardholder data storage, pricing, online commerce, or related areas.
- A strong product mindset and willingness to deeply understand product needs and design for long-term flexibility.
- Ability to thrive in high-growth, ambiguous environments while balancing fast execution with technical rigor and system reliability.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build consensus among internal and external stakeholders.
