GitLab is seeking a People Systems Engineer to drive the evolution of its People systems through an AI-first transformation mindset. The role involves building and maintaining code, pipelines, automations, agents, and integrations across Workato, Google Cloud, Claude, Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, and internal tools. The engineer will help create a reliable, scalable People technology foundation for GitLab's globally distributed workforce.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design, development, and maintenance of People system automations and integrations across Workato, Google Cloud Platform, Claude, Workday, Greenhouse, and GitLab.
  • Write reliable, well-tested code that runs at scale.
  • Build and maintain integrations between Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, and internal tools using Workday Web Services (WWS), Slack's API, and Slack Bot SDK.
  • Diagnose failures proactively and improve uptime and reliability across the automation stack.
  • Write, version, and maintain automation code in Ruby or comparable scripting languages, stored in GitLab.
  • Apply clear documentation, code reviews, and disciplined change management practices.
  • Develop and manage Slack apps and bots that deliver automated workflows for People teams and employees.
  • Diagnose root problems, challenge assumptions, and design durable, scalable automation solutions.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on Workato automation architecture, driving standardization, reusability, and scalability.
  • Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment practices for People system automation using GitLab.
  • Leverage AI tools, large language models, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) frameworks, including Claude, to accelerate development and eliminate manual work.
  • Provide technical guidance to teammates and stakeholders while partnering with InfoSec, AI Engineering, and IT.
  • Share solutions and problem-solving approaches and exercise independent judgment on engineering methods and evaluation criteria.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience writing and maintaining code in Ruby or a comparable scripting language such as Python or PHP.
  • Deep expertise in Workato or a comparable enterprise automation and integration platform, with experience building reliable, scalable production workflows.
  • Strong experience integrating with Workday using Workday Web Services (WWS).
  • Experience building Slack apps and automations using Slack's API and Bot SDK.
  • Proficiency with Git and GitLab for version control, code review, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform or AWS.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes; GKE experience is a bonus.
  • Experience connecting HR systems including Workday, Greenhouse, and internal tools.
  • Comfort working with AI tools and MCP frameworks.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical architecture into clear decisions and stakeholder updates.
  • An engineering mindset focused on reliability, observability, and maintainability.
  • Understanding of HR data flows and how to build accurate, careful People system automations.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a bias for action.
