Staff Software Engineer, Media Experiences

Reddit is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical architecture of its media infrastructure. The role will define the strategy for ingesting, processing, storing, and delivering video and audio content, while helping shape media product strategy and deliver high-quality media experiences globally.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and evolution of global media processing and delivery infrastructure for low-latency, high-availability media at scale.
• Build and optimize resilient backend services for video and audio ingestion, distributed transcoding, and CDN routing.
• Partner with ML and AI teams to develop a roadmap supporting media recommendation, intelligent content moderation, and generative AI inference.
• Establish engineering best practices, design the next generation of media services, and define strict SLOs and SLAs for media operations.
• Guide and empower multiple engineering teams.
• Translate complex product requirements into actionable technical roadmaps and drive alignment across the company.
• Use AI-assisted development tools for prototyping, system design, and coding, applying rigorous judgment to validate and own the final outputs.
• Evangelize AI as a development tool.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proven track record as a Technical Lead or Staff Engineer.
• Expertise designing and operating large-scale distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and microservices.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to influence technical direction and navigate tradeoffs between performance, reliability, and business impact without directly managing engineers.
• Demonstrated ability to lead large, cross-functional engineering initiatives while balancing technical excellence.

The base salary range for this position is $217,000–$303,000 USD. Depending on the position offered, the role may also be eligible to receive a commission. In select roles and locations, interviews may be recorded, transcribed, and summarized by artificial intelligence, with an option to opt out before scheduled interviews.
