Staff Software Engineer, Mobile QA

Coinbase is hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Mobile QA to join the App Infra team within the Consumer & Business group. The team is leading a greenfield native rewrite of Coinbase's retail mobile app in Swift and Kotlin, replacing the existing React Native codebase to deliver a faster experience for millions of customers. The role will help reinvent the mobile release process and establish rigorous quality gates for releases. You will set Coinbase's frontend quality bar and translate organizational strategy into test infrastructure and operational practices used by approximately 30 product teams.

Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only, company. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.”

Responsibilities

• Own the technical strategy for mobile QA infrastructure across the native rewrite.
• Design operational practices that reduce maintenance and operational overhead while improving release quality.
• Build and scale automated test systems for recurring regression testing.
• Determine what should be automated versus handled manually across regression testing, performance validation, and release-readiness gating.
• Lead the QA readiness workstream for the phased rollout, including success metrics, resourcing, and operations.
• Guide decisions on when to increase or reduce testing resources as quality gains diminish.
• Partner with engineering leadership, product, and design to define SLOs and quality dashboards that support metric-driven rollout decisions.
• Shape the QA onboarding playbook for product teams transitioning to native development.
• Set the hiring bar for QA contributors and mentor L3–L5 engineers on test architecture, native debugging, and quality standards.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in mobile test infrastructure.
• Experience architecting automated regression systems for native iOS and Android applications at scale.
• A track record of defining and delivering test infrastructure strategies used by other engineering teams.
• Strong proficiency in Swift and Kotlin, including the ability to architect test frameworks, debug native app behavior, and enforce compile-time quality constraints.
• Experience operating QA processes during large-scale migrations or platform transitions, including dual-codebase parity validation and phased rollout quality gates.
• Experience leading SEVs and postmortems that improve team practices.
• Demonstrated ability to build alignment and secure commitment from cross-team and cross-functional partners on quality standards, testing strategy, and release criteria.
• Ability to use generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight while delivering business-ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Compensation

The annual base salary range, excluding equity and bonus, is $218,025–$286,500 USD. Total compensation may also include equity and bonus eligibility, as well as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
