Details
Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Platform Safety team builds infrastructure that controls access to Anthropic's most capable models, including identity and business verification, trusted access programs, and core services that grant, hold, and enforce model access across products.
The Staff+ Software Engineer will help set the technical direction for this work, scaling systems so that access can be configured instead of coded, verification can be reused, and customers receive a consistent experience across product surfaces. The role involves working with safeguards, product, design, and research teams to turn safety policy into usable and enforceable systems, as well as leading new 0-to-1 initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate systems that determine who can access Anthropic's most capable models.
- Build a platform that enables teams to launch and operate trusted access programs, moving access rules from code into data.
- Develop identity and business verification systems, including KYC/KYB, as reusable services.
- Integrate verification vendors, protect sensitive personal data, expand verification into new regions, and build fair customer review and appeal paths.
- Evolve core services supporting access decisions, including services that grant and hold access and the customer and user identity models they depend on.
- Maintain high availability and consistency across Anthropic's products and cloud platforms.
- Shape architecture through written proposals and review key designs.
- Mentor engineers on a growing team.
- Participate in on-call rotations, lead incident response, and support emerging programs.
Requirements
- At least 8 years of practical experience as a backend or platform engineer, ideally at a technical lead level or equivalent.
- Comfort working across the stack when required by the problem.
- Strong product sense and the ability to work with cross-functional partners, including non-engineers, to shape and execute strategy in new domains.
- Regular use of AI tools when designing, building, and reviewing software.
- Experience designing and operating production distributed systems on a critical path where correctness, latency, and availability matter.
- Ability to take full ownership from design through build, deployment, operations, and iteration.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, make sound technical decisions independently, and set technical direction adopted by other engineers and teams.
- Experience in both 0-to-1 and mature engineering environments is preferred.
- Commitment to building robust, scalable systems that other engineers and businesses can use effectively.
- Interest in the societal impact of the work and Anthropic's mission to build safe, beneficial AI.
Strong Candidates May Also Have
- Experience with identity, access control, or authorization systems at scale.
- Experience with fraud, risk, trust and safety, or KYC/KYB systems, including verification vendors.
- Experience in regulated or compliance-sensitive environments involving sensitive personal data.
- Experience integrating with cloud platforms or partner ecosystems such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- A field relevant to the role, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.
- Required years of experience correlate with the internal job level requirements.
Compensation
- Annual salary: $405,000–$485,000 USD.
- Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; there is no stated deadline.
Work Arrangement and Benefits
- The role follows a location-based hybrid policy, with staff expected to work from an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time. Some roles may require more office time.
- Anthropic offers competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office collaboration space.
- Anthropic sponsors visas and states that it will make every reasonable effort to obtain a visa for candidates who receive an offer, although sponsorship is not guaranteed for every role or candidate.
