Details

Global Tax Engineering at Airbnb builds systems that support the company’s global growth and compliance across jurisdictions. The team owns guest- and host-facing product experiences and backend systems, with a focus on improving the accuracy, latency, and reliability of host-facing tax systems.

Responsibilities

  • Build microservices and APIs that drive platform integrations across web and mobile platforms.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build interfaces and systems that evolve to meet critical business needs.
  • Build infrastructure, applications, tools, and platforms for distributed systems, large compute clusters, and petabyte-scale storage infrastructure.
  • Scale distributed applications in a highly available, 24x7 environment.
  • Make architectural trade-offs using design patterns and disciplined execution.
  • Lead engineers through significant architectural changes.
  • Shape the team’s technical roadmap and long-term strategy.
  • Lead technical discussions, mentor engineers, and drive engineering excellence across team boundaries.
  • Build alignment with partner teams on architectural decisions and trade-offs.
  • Collaborate with design, product, data science, data engineering, and platform teams.
  • Contribute to systems reliability through observability, incident management, and fault-tolerant services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 9+ years of industry experience.
  • Real-world experience and demonstrable knowledge of one or more of Java, Kotlin, relational databases, and distributed systems.
  • Experience leading teams through technical discussions, mentoring engineers, and driving engineering excellence across team boundaries.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with partner teams on key architectural decisions and trade-offs.
  • Exposure to architectural patterns for high-scale web applications, including well-designed APIs, data pipelines, and efficient algorithms.
  • Experience or desire to work collaboratively with design, product, and data science partners.
  • Familiarity with AI development tools.
  • Strong understanding of systems reliability, including observability, incident management, and fault-tolerant services.
  • Experience managing engineers or a strong interest in growing into people leadership.

Work Location

This position is US remote eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed with the manager. Employees must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity.
