Software Engineer, Backend (Consumer - Risk)

Coinbase is hiring a Software Engineer to join the Risk Engineering team within the Consumer Product Group. The team builds flexible, scalable systems to detect and prevent fraud, incorporating risk decisioning, real-time monitoring, and intelligent mitigation. You will design, build, and optimize risk detection and mitigation systems that balance technical excellence, system reliability, and business impact across critical, high-throughput services.

Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.”

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain backend services for risk detection, fraud prevention, and financial risk mitigation across Coinbase’s platform, operating at the scale, speed, and 24/7 nature of crypto markets.
• Own feature delivery end-to-end, from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
• Partner with Data Science, Machine Learning, and Risk Analyst teams to develop proactive systems, including models and user-facing risk features, as well as reactive solutions such as risk mitigations and incident-response tooling.
• Improve reliability and observability in risk platform services by identifying regressions, ensuring prompt visibility of issues, and contributing to incident response and post-mortems.
• Contribute to the engineering culture through high code velocity, code reviews, and reusable solutions.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of backend software engineering experience, with a record of shipping production services handling high-throughput workloads across multiple concurrent projects.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language, such as Go, Ruby, Python, or Java.
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP, containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes, and event-streaming architectures such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
• Strong understanding of software design patterns, data structures, and algorithms, with the ability to independently manage complex tasks and work in unfamiliar systems with guidance.
• Experience building or working with high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems, including APIs, event-driven architectures, and cloud infrastructure.
• Experience with risk, fraud detection, payment systems such as ACH or cards, blockchain technology such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, or risk challenges associated with crypto transactions.
• Responsible use of generative AI with human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Compensation

• Annual base salary: $154,000 CAD, excluding equity and bonus.
• Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and medical, dental, and vision benefits.
