Senior Data Scientist, Trust (Inference)

Airbnb's Platform Data Science team combines scientific rigor with domain expertise across experimentation, machine learning, causal inference, and scalable intelligence. The Trust data science team partners with product, engineering, policy, and operations teams to detect and defend against fraudulent listings, fake inventory, review and content manipulation, account takeover, and other bad-actor activity.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement measurement and evaluation frameworks to understand the impact of Trust defenses and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Lead the design and analysis of experiments and quasi-experiments in environments where standard A/B testing is challenging.
• Build and iterate on statistical and Bayesian models to quantify risk, estimate treatment effects, and identify measurement gaps.
• Provide causal interpretation of signals surfaced by machine learning systems.
• Generate insights into the effectiveness of Trust defenses and translate them into strategic recommendations for product roadmaps and policy decisions.
• Deliver leadership-ready research through rigorous analysis, compelling data visualizations, and clear narratives.
• Communicate complex methodological tradeoffs to technical and non-technical audiences across product, engineering, policy, and operations.
• Help scale and evolve data science capabilities within the domain and contribute to the long-term vision for how science drives platform outcomes.

Requirements

• 5+ years of industry experience in a quantitative analysis role with a master's degree in a quantitative field such as statistics, economics, or computer science, or 2+ years of experience with a PhD in a relevant field.
• Deep expertise in experimentation and causal inference.
• Strong knowledge of Bayesian modeling and its application to measurement, uncertainty quantification, and decision-making.
• Experience designing and leading experimentation programs in complex environments, collaborating with and influencing cross-functional stakeholders.
• Proficiency in statistical programming and database usage.
• Strong coding skills in SQL and Python or R.
• Ability to translate complex methodological findings into actionable insights and compelling narratives for audiences with varying technical backgrounds.
• Excellent judgment in navigating ambiguity, scoping problems, and driving impact through influence across cross-functional teams.

Location

This position is eligible for remote work in the United States. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed with the manager. Employees must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity.

Compensation

The base pay range is $179,000–$210,000 USD per year. The role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
