Airbnb's Payments team supports the company's mission by economically empowering Airbnb businesses and its global community of guests and Hosts. The team builds and operates an in-house payments platform across global markets, currencies, payment methods, regulatory environments, and partner integrations, with a focus on scale, reliability, compliance, and product flexibility.
As an Engineering Manager, you will lead one or more engineering teams responsible for building and operating critical payments systems. You will establish team priorities, support engineers and technical leads, and partner with Product, Design, Data Science, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Operations, and external payment partners to deliver high-quality payment experiences.
The role involves navigating complex and ambiguous problems, balancing near-term execution with long-term platform health, defining roadmaps, supporting scale and reliability, addressing regulatory needs, reducing technical debt, and maintaining operational excellence for systems that move money globally.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with senior leaders to define and drive long-term technical strategy and architecture.
- Establish a technical vision and lead the architecture, development, and launch of reliable, performant, and scalable solutions.
- Collaborate with and influence cross-functional partners to design and deliver high-quality products.
- Lead technical initiatives and identify opportunities for business impact.
- Refine and prioritize requirements for engineering systems.
- Align technical efforts with business outcomes and product priorities.
- Nurture a culture of technical quality and engineering excellence from design through code review and production.
- Enable individual contributors to expand their impact beyond individual contributions and lead technical initiatives spanning platforms and organizations.
- Retain, grow, and hire high-performing engineers.
- Build a strong and diverse engineering team capable of delivering ambitious product visions.
Requirements
- 3–5+ years of hands-on experience managing an engineering team.
- 9+ years of relevant software development industry experience in a fast-paced technology environment.
- Bachelor's and/or master's degree, preferably in computer science, or equivalent experience.
- Strong expertise building large-scale backend systems and experience with user-facing features.
- Strong product and design instincts, with proven experience building well-designed experiences.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including experience working with multiple engineering teams and cross-functional partners.
- Flexible leadership style and the ability to adapt to different ways of working.
- Experience leading and shipping large initiatives with significant business impact.
- Experience fostering operational excellence, quality, reliability, and availability.
- Good judgment when balancing short-term business needs with long-term technical quality.

Location
This position is US remote eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed with the manager. Candidates must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Eligibility may vary if the position is employed by another Airbnb entity.

Compensation
The base pay range is $212,000–$265,000 USD per year. Actual base pay depends on factors including training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and market demands.
