Details
The Intelligence and Investigations team provides intelligence to decision-makers across OpenAI and investigates severe misuse of its products. I2 Engineering builds tools that help analysts and investigators understand complex datasets, identify on-platform and off-platform risks, and investigate severe misuse.
The role combines hands-on software and data work with participation in investigations. The analyst will work with investigators to understand difficult cases, contribute to analysis, and build tools and workflows that improve investigative work. Depending on the problem, responsibilities may include tracing activity across internal systems, writing queries or small applications, prototyping AI-assisted workflows, improving evidence assembly, and turning recurring investigative needs into durable product capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Work directly alongside investigators on complex cases, helping develop leads, analyze evidence, and identify useful technical approaches.
- Build and maintain software, data workflows, and internal tools that accelerate investigations of potential high-severity misuse or harm.
- Use Python, SQL, and internal data systems to gather, connect, and analyze information relevant to investigative work.
- Apply OpenAI models to research, search, triage, synthesis, and evidence review while keeping expert investigators informed and in control.
- Turn recurring investigative bottlenecks into reliable tools, automation, and product capabilities that support multiple users and cases.
- Prototype quickly when new investigative questions arise, then improve reliability, usability, and maintainability as requirements become clearer.
- Respect privacy, permissions, evidence-handling requirements, and operational safeguards related to sensitive investigative work.
- Collaborate with teams across Applied, Safety Systems, Research, User Operations, and Strategy.
Requirements
- Experience building and shipping software, internal tools, data workflows, or operational products.
- Experience working directly with investigators, analysts, or other subject matter experts in ambiguous or consequential situations.
- Practical experience with Python, SQL, and structured or unstructured data.
- Ability to investigate unclear problems, follow evidence across systems, and turn findings into practical next steps.
- Sound judgment regarding privacy, data access, evidence quality, and the consequences of investigative errors.
- Interest in using AI systems to extend human investigative capability while keeping expert judgment central.
- Flexibility to move between coding, analysis, investigative support, and collaboration with technical and operational partners.
- Experience in trust and safety, security, intelligence, investigations, or related domains is helpful but not required.
Benefits
