OpenAI's ChatGPT team works across research, engineering, product, and design to bring its technology to a diverse audience of users. The team seeks to learn from deployment and distribute the benefits of AI responsibly and safely.

The Product Design Manager will lead a team of eight or more product designers focused on consumer growth across the customer journey, including discovery, onboarding, activation, engagement, retention, and expansion. This design leadership role involves building an exceptional team, setting direction, maintaining a high craft bar, and helping designers navigate ambiguity, make thoughtful product decisions, and ship cohesive experiences at scale.

The role partners closely with product, engineering, data science, research, content design, and go-to-market leaders. The manager will combine deep design judgment with business acumen to advance user needs, product quality, and sustainable business outcomes. The role is based at OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a high-performing team of product designers through clarity, feedback, and support.
  • Maintain a high craft bar and help the team turn complex problems into simple, intuitive, and cohesive experiences.
  • Set a clear design vision for how people discover, adopt, and continue receiving value from products.
  • Decide where the team should focus, match people to the right opportunities, and make thoughtful tradeoffs.
  • Work with product, engineering, data science, research, and business leaders to shape long-term direction and near-term product development.
  • Combine research, data, experimentation, and design judgment to create meaningful value for users and the business.
  • Connect teams, customer journeys, and product surfaces so the overall experience feels intentional and cohesive.
  • Help define responsible, AI-native consumer growth experiences at global scale.

Requirements

  • Experience leading and growing a sizeable product design team, including thoughtful hiring and people development.
  • Strong design craft and the ability to raise work quality through clear direction, critique, coaching, and sound decisions.
  • Experience leading design for consumer products at scale, particularly across complex journeys or a portfolio of connected work.
  • Understanding of how design choices affect adoption, retention, revenue, and long-term product health.
  • Ability to use data, research, experimentation, and judgment to guide product decisions.
  • Ability to identify high-impact problems and turn a fast-moving, ambiguous environment into a clear vision and set of priorities.
  • Ability to move between big-picture strategy, portfolio planning, and detailed design work.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to build strong cross-functional relationships with teams and senior leaders.
  • Interest in rethinking familiar growth patterns and creating experiences that are native to AI.
