About the Team
Safety Systems manages the complete lifecycle of safety efforts for OpenAI’s frontier models, ensuring that models are deployed responsibly and have a positive impact on society. The team’s work spans system-level safeguards, model training, evaluation, and red-teaming to mitigate misuse and maintain a high bar for safety.
The team leads OpenAI’s commitment to developing and deploying safe Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), while fostering trust, responsibility, and transparency. Its goal is to continuously learn from deployments, distribute AI’s benefits widely, and ensure that powerful tools remain aligned with human values and safety considerations.
About the Role
The Safety Measurement Product Manager owns OpenAI’s approach to measuring harm and safeguard efficacy in production. This includes driving the strategy for safety measurement platforms and products used across the company.
You will partner closely with safety research and engineering teams to determine what, where, and how to measure safety outcomes. Your insights will inform critical leadership decisions and feed back into safety work. You will also represent the company’s topline safety metric and prioritize requests from partner teams to expand the safety measurement platform to additional use cases.
This position is based in San Francisco, California, with relocation assistance available.
Responsibilities
- Partner with data science, research, engineering, policy teams, and other stakeholders to develop a vision for understanding safety outcomes and prevalence across platforms.
- Define strategic priorities and product roadmaps to improve safety measurement approaches while scaling the measurement platform to additional use cases, products, and cross-functional team needs.
- Establish repeatable processes for integrating cutting-edge AI safety research into OpenAI’s safety measurement products.
- Develop and continuously refine clear, actionable success criteria that capture the organization’s ambitions for safety measurement.
- Represent quantitative progress on safety to senior leadership.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in product management or related industry roles, with specific expertise in AI safety, trust and safety, integrity, or related domains.
- Background in data science, statistics, economics, or a related field.
- Deep curiosity and interest in interdisciplinary fields such as human-computer interaction, psychology, philosophy, or similar areas.
- Hands-on experience driving consensus and action in ambiguous environments.
- Ability to identify and challenge underlying assumptions and constraints through insightful questioning.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and persuasively.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
