Product Policy Manager, Product Risk

As the Product Policy Manager for Product Risk, you will help set and execute the Safeguards team's approach to assessing product launches for safety risks and work with cross-functional stakeholders to drive appropriate safety mitigations. You will collaborate with product, legal, public policy, engineering, and Safeguards teams to understand upcoming features, anticipate potential misuse or unintended consequences, and develop policies that balance innovation with responsibility.

This role may involve exposure to explicit content, including sexual, violent, or psychologically disturbing material.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain risk assessment frameworks for identifying and evaluating potential safety risks associated with new product features and functionality.
• Conduct and drive comprehensive product safety reviews covering technical and non-technical harms to inform product launches and safety mitigation strategies.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and Safeguards stakeholders to leverage policy, enforcement, and engineering expertise.
• Analyze potential misuse, unintended consequences, and harmful outputs of new model and product capabilities, and translate the analysis into mitigation delivery.
• Use subject-matter-expert risk assessments to inform product safety recommendations.
• Design and run bespoke evaluations for products requiring tailored assessment, and contribute to the product safety evaluations strategy.
• Craft policy recommendations that balance innovation with responsible AI deployment.
• Monitor industry trends and emerging risks in AI development.
• Contribute to regular reports on product policy risks and mitigations for senior leadership.

Requirements

• Strong technical background and the ability to explain highly technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Understanding of safety policies and safety considerations across a wide range of product surfaces.
• Ability to prioritize resources and focus areas for safety mitigations within a high-volume launch process.
• Experience conducting risk evaluations of novel products in fast-moving organizations.
• Demonstrated experience collaborating with product and engineering teams to integrate safety considerations into product development.
• Thorough understanding of AI ethics, responsible AI principles, and current debates surrounding AI safety and governance.
• Ability to anticipate potential technology misuse and develop innovative risk-mitigation solutions.
• Strong program management skills, including the ability to drive policy development from ideation through implementation.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The field of study must be relevant to the role through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Compensation

• Annual salary: $245,000–$285,000 USD

Work Policy

• Remote-friendly with travel required.
• Staff are currently expected to work from one of the company's offices at least 25% of the time, although some roles may require more office time.
