Professional Services Technical Architect

As a Professional Services Technical Architect at GitLab, you will lead the technical direction of customer engagements from scoping and discovery through delivery and handoff. You will design architectures and implementation plans for GitLab infrastructure and functionality, coordinate implementation work across GitLab Professional Services, partners, and customers, and ensure deliverables align with customer requirements and Statements of Work.

The role supports GitLab deployments in cloud and on-premises environments, including infrastructure-as-code implementations with Terraform, Ansible, and the GitLab Environment Toolkit. You will also lead source code management and CI/CD migrations to GitLab using Congregate or similar tooling, provide DevOps and DevSecOps consulting, and create reusable documentation, delivery kits, training materials, case studies, and best-practice methodologies. The position operates in GitLab's remote, asynchronous environment and may require up to 25% travel.

Responsibilities

• Design and deliver GitLab reference architecture implementations for self-managed and cloud environments using infrastructure-as-code practices.
• Lead source code management and CI/CD migrations to GitLab, including large-scale enterprise migrations using Congregate.
• Lead the full technical delivery lifecycle for Professional Services engagements, from technical discovery and scoping through implementation and handoff.
• Produce high-level and detailed technical designs for GitLab infrastructure and functionality.
• Evaluate and communicate scalability, security, compliance, and performance considerations.
• Deploy and configure GitLab in on-premises environments and on major cloud providers using Terraform, Ansible, and the GitLab Environment Toolkit.
• Plan and execute source-system migrations while reducing risk, protecting data integrity, and minimizing downtime.
• Provide DevOps and DevSecOps consulting and guidance on frameworks such as the Delivery Governance Framework and GitLab Flow.
• Coordinate implementation work across GitLab team members, partners, and customer stakeholders using clear asynchronous communication and documented decisions.
• Mentor Professional Services and partner consultants through documentation, delivery kits, training materials, and enablement sessions.
• Maintain delivery automation assets with clean, maintainable code and appropriate unit and integration testing.
• Support scoping and Statement of Work creation, stay current on GitLab releases, and assist with technical vetting and staffing assessments while maintaining 55% billable utilization.
• Review training materials and presentations and develop case studies, design documentation, and best-practice methodologies.

Requirements

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to lead customer and partner technical discussions and communicate risks and trade-offs.
• Demonstrated experience delivering at least two of the following consulting services: source code management migration, cloud architecture, DevOps engineering, or CI/CD consulting.
• Enterprise software development experience and the ability to translate requirements into technical designs and implementation plans.
• Progressive DevOps platform experience designing and implementing reliable, scalable systems.
• Hands-on experience deploying and managing infrastructure in cloud and on-premises environments using tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
• Ability to write clean, maintainable automation and integration code, including Terraform modules, Ansible roles, and scripts, and validate changes through testing and code review.
• Experience performing migrations to GitLab using Congregate or similar migration tooling.
• Working knowledge of data consistency and integrity concepts, including ACID properties, and their impact on migration design and performance trade-offs.
• Strong problem-solving, decision-making, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous environment across time zones.
• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or another advanced technical degree, or equivalent experience.
• Comfortable with up to 25% travel.
