ClickHouse is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to help build ClickStack, an open-source, petabyte-scale observability platform that brings logs, metrics, traces, and session replays together to help developers monitor, debug, and scale production applications.

Responsibilities

  • Own and build key backend services and infrastructure for the observability platform.
  • Ensure reliable, high-throughput data pipelines and APIs.
  • Collaborate with open-source contributors and customers, solve their challenges, and incorporate feedback into backend architecture and API design.
  • Design and implement scalable backend systems capable of ingesting, processing, and querying petabytes of observability data.
  • Build foundational services that help engineers diagnose production issues.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend development, preferably building developer tools or infrastructure.
  • Strong TypeScript and Node.js skills, with experience in Express, Fastify, or similar frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of API design, distributed systems, and data modeling.
  • Experience with reliable and performant backend services.
  • Familiarity with containerized environments, including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Passion for open source and the developer community.
  • Experience creating developer tooling and designing for developers.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with Go is a plus.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with ClickHouse, PostgreSQL, or other analytical or OLTP databases.
  • Familiarity with OpenTelemetry, logging pipelines, or metrics infrastructure.
  • Experience with SDKs or client library design.
  • Exposure to message queues, streaming systems such as Kafka or NATS, or event-driven architectures.
  • Strong opinions on observability tools and a vision for improving them.

Compensation

The typical starting salary in the United States is $130,000-$208,000 USD. A premium market range applies in certain locations, such as the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City Metro Area, with a typical starting salary of $141,000-$230,000 USD. Actual compensation depends on factors including education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs.
